So i have been driving for 8yrs been trying to become an o/o for a while but have had bad luck when financing my credit sucks and now i have an opportunity to be an owner operator from my boss either using his authority or mine price difference in the truck is 5k depending on whos authority i use truck has a fresh overhaul with 1.8million miles and hes willing to take 8k down and mthly payment he didnt do the bull gear on it i read that most ppl dont on series 60 engines becuase its not included on the overhaul kits my question is should i just keep saving money or jump on the opportunity he does do all the maintenance on his trucks but i feel he does the minimum to keep the truck running

if important work to the truck was not done, YOU absorb that cost.

    you said your credit sucks?

how you gonna come up with the money to make repairs?

continue to save your money, repair your sucky credit, then get a better truck, FROM SOMEPLACE ELSE that does not need repairs out of the box..

    get your OWN authority...

this smells bad, stay away. the boss will get rich, and you will drown.

The smart people do the bull gear. A bull gear failure will cause catastrophic engine failure. In my opinion I would stay away from it just based on that alone.

Your boss isn't offering you that truck out of the goodness of his heart. He's offering it to you because he knows it's worn out and he can make more money with you assuming the risks for repairs.
If he's decent to work for stay with him and save every dime you can. There are better truck deals out there than the one he's trying to get you to take.

All depends on what year/make of Truck it is, what the total price is, and the Lease agreement. Too many unknowns to say. Bull Gear is important, About a $3000 Job. So many other things that wear out, paying a Shop to do all the repairs that come up would be a problem. $5k difference in price? More or less? Getting your Own Authority can be very expensive for Insurance. Hardly worth an extra 15% pay for instance. Learning the ropes on a tight Budget, and having repairs, payments due is not easy. I think O dn and running under his Authority would be a better way to do it. Even then, a lot would depend on the make/ model of Truck along with the condition of it. 800k, or 1.8 mil. I don’t care. Really not much difference, all depends on the Truck, and the repair history.

Sounds shady. 1.8 million, sad to say, is pushing it on the chassis.

Regardless if the bull gear was done or not the rest of the truck is borderline worn out. Especially considering the trucks only get minimum maintenance. Too many red flags for me to chance based on how I read the situation.
