I need some advise from the old heads! Currently im driving local for a roofing material distributor home every night off every weekend pay is ok only because im a rookie still on my first year I have seniority so my job is pretty secure.. HERES MY DELIMA! I want to get out there and make some money , I dont mind working I love working especially if my work pays off not only do I want to make money I need to make money I have a family! So do I stay here local and work my way up to the income I desire (which could take a couple years) or do I take my family down south to haul for oil rigs and make all the money necessary to raise my kids, but at the same time not ever see them due to long hours?

THERE'S GOT TO BE SOMEBODY IN THE SAME BOAT!

Family is more important than any compensation you may gain... a couple years is nothing in the scheme of things.

    IMO...

Stay home with your wife and kids.

When your kids are older and gone they won't remember or care how much money you made...

long hours are the norm in the oil field... it is work, eat sleep, rinse and repeat.

money isnt everything....TONS of kids live a happy normal life without all the new "toys and gadgets"....if you are able to provide for your family, food, shelter, clothing. i would STAY put....i have MANY regrets when it comes to my kids and working so much.....time YOU CAN NOT get back.

how old are you? how old are your kids? yes, you may be able to buy more with more money, but will be too tired to spend time with your family...if you have a decent job , keep it.....

But im thinking what I have is special not very many people can go straight from school to a local job very grateful for that also grateful to have a family to come home to everyday . Ill take yalls advise and stay put for a while :)

Who said you would work long hours working in the oil industry? Sure if you want long hours it is there, but there are also plenty of outfits who run for only 12 hours a shift. Also there are plenty of outfits who work 5 on 2 off then 5 on 3 off so you get an extra day off every other week for family time. Just need to look around if you are serious about working in the oil industry.

Honestly, I see my husband more than I thought I would when he decided to be a trucker. He works 14 hrs a day 5 days a week in S TX oilfield. He has a window everyday with us it is short but sufficient. He works nights I think if he worked days it would be different. There are some guys at his job who don't like to work so much so they work less days but everyone has to work 14 hrs.

You would need to take other things in consideration like schools which are not so great but not bad and housing costs for a family. Where I live it is higher than normal but a short commute to his work. Look closer to San ANtonio or Corpus CHristi where is more affordable and more options.

I am just now moving to Corpus Christi and housing is not that easy to find. I thought based on apt ads it would be easy. Not so. So far nothing acceptable until at least next month. I guess if I wanted to live in the slums I could sign a one year lease and move in tomorrow. But I don't want that. It would be ok for a month or two but not a year.
