How hard would it be to take off the side fairings
And just put steps on the fuel tank, is it as simple as plug and play or a slot of modification,
    It's a freightliner Columbia 05.

Probably not hard at all. Couple of wrenches and some time. Of course, you'll probably need to install some steps. Seeing as those in the pic are toast. Guessing the ones for getting in the cab are too.

I took them off my international.
I switched from 100 gal tanks to 150's at the same time, same diameter, but longer.
I had to have the little quarter or half fenders, what ever they are called.
tank straps with provisions for the steps.
    steps
    frame brackets for the tanks.
even though the tanks were the same diameter, the straps with the step provisions were a different length, I have no idea why, but I had to get the brackets that went with them.
Was it worth it, well YEA, wish I had done it several years before. lol

Your choice to do or not to. Very simple easy job, even with hand tools. Like other have said you will then need to install steps. So probably need new tank straps.

Steps are expensive from dealer. Best find some in the junk yard. Or cheaper ones, and better, aftermarket.Easy job, put an old tire under it, with tanks real low on fuel. Works great. No need to use a jack or strap, if tires fit up tight against tank. Loosening straps, changing, 1 at a time. I had to rotate my tanks, same way, easy job.

Yeah get rid of the fairings, always in the way. Too expensive to replace. When you need a new bumper, go with 1 pc chrome. 1/3 the price of plastic junk.

Agreed, but the problem with the 1 piece chrome/stainless is. The plastic comes in 3 pieces. When you do whatever you did, that created the need for a new bumper. They are unforgiven, no pulling it out or bending it back. You will have to replace the whole thing again.

    Rideandrepair Thanks this.
