I just accepted a conditional job offer for a road driver position with Fedex Freight in Terre Haute, IN. I currently drive for Walmart, but I'm concerned about the future of the private fleet. I also would like to be home more. I have a background in LTL (Dayton Freight p&d 6 years).
I'm looking for a little input from road drivers.
Am I going to starve for the first year?
I don't mind working the dock. I don't mind working nights. I've read a ton of threads on multiple forums. Like any job, some love it , some don't. I guess I'm just looking for some reassurance that I'll be able to survive on the bottom of the board for a while.
Should I take the job?

I've no doubt you'll survive. And you have a great advantage with your attitude. Too many guys are all "I don't wanna work nights, I don't wanna do dockwork, waah waah waah!" They seem to think that if they can't just stroll right into a $120K/yr daytime line run, then screw it.
You'll be fine. You're already used to a certain degree of micromanagement with WM, so that shouldn't be a problem, and even if you wind up on the dock most of the night, you'll still make bank. Welcome aboard!!CorsairFanboy, Chuckman73, Lonesome and 1 other person Thank this. -
Thank you!

A lot of dock work when new
If nights are your thing, I would have went to Estes or USF Holland instead
Seems XPO/Conway is not recommended -
Long term FedEx is the best deal
Chuckman73 Thanks this. -
Lonesome Thanks this.

You'll have to keep us updated.. I'm also a Wal-Mart driver looking at FedEx. I came from Conway so i know what to expect but i know how crappy the bottom of the board is as well
Bigblk Thanks this. -
