A 13 speed trans would've made a huge difference pulling hills! Maybe it's just me but.............I don't understand why so many folks buy trucks with 10 speeds. Too much space between gears. I owned ONE truck with a 10 speed and hated that transmission! It was possible to start off, loaded, in 3rd gear! 470 S60 Detroit with 3.70 rears 80,000 lbs. Not advisable, but you're really dealing with a 7 speed! If you're running flat land all the time, no problem. But if you have to deal with hills, a 13/18 speed (properly operated) is the only way to go.
I'd rather have an auto than a 10 speed...........

I hauled cattle for 4 years usually over 80k gross and ran all over the country with the same setup you described and I survived. Lol. But I’m also stubborn and wouldn’t have pulled a new 10spd and new driveline out to swap in a 13 anyway.

I could've made that Detroit sing with a 13 though........

Tbh most new engines have so much torque down low a 10 speed does the job it’s only the high/ low range split that’s a problem. Most guys with a 13 speed drop a full gear to start on a hard pull to hit direct sooner which is the same as 9th in a 10 speed. My experience is on non neutered trucks though so I can see why some hate 10 speeds.
