    Which is a better company...

    Heartland Express
    Knight Transport
    Transport America

He's currently with Knight and wants to go with a different company...which in your opinion is a better company?:O_o_1PIRATES31:

    None of the above?

How about some more info about your husband?

How long has he been driivng?
    Where does he live?
Does he have reefer, dry van or flat bed experience?

Answer these questions and maybe we can offer some better suggestions than the 3 you listed (by the way the 3 you listed are beginner oriented carriers with low pay scales and bennies).

He just started driving 5 months ago, he is currently with Knight... and we ALL know that they suck! He's only driven Dry Van's, we live in the Chicago area.

He might want to stick with them for at least another 7 months. It will show that he doesn't jump from one company to another - that history will follow him. Just IMHO- but then I'm just starting myself - so I will wait to see what others say.

Since you live in the Chicago area he should be able to find local work.

Even with 5 months experience, it is all how he presents himself.

You are in a great transportation area.

Hmmm 5 months experience may make it difficult for him to find a decent carrier to sign on with. If He can stick it out a year then that would be better.

    I will give you a few different suggestions;

    Averitt Express.
    Roehl.
    Frito Lay.

Of course the ltl carriers will have the best pay and benefits packages available. Companies such as Fed Ex, Ups, Yellow, Roadway, ABF, Vitran, Old Dominion, Conway, Sai, etc.

If you can get your husband into an ltl carier he will have a much better career track for pay, benefits, and home time.

    Good luck to you both.

Yellow and Roadway are no more. The company is now known as YRC.

To the OP: Tell him to apply at local grocery companies. Some of them may take him with the five months.

    Just so you know.

You are right Yellow bought Roadway and the comapny has been renamed. I though they were still operating under the old names though.

I worked for Roehl when I first started driving and that would be my choice for an OTR carrier in that region - they have an enormous Chicagoland customer base..

Chicagoland is LTL heaven though. All of the big LTL players operate at least one major hub in the area but most operate two or three..

I know we operate 9 Chicagoland terminals and three are huge.. Probably no better place in the country for an LTL job than the Chi..

No real point for any newer driver applying to YRC though.. In my region of the Mid-Atlantic it takes about 15 years with YRC to still have employment due to the state of the company.. The lay-off list is deeper than the seniority roster.. If you're interested in a quality union freight job check out UPS Freight.. Best pay in the industry period and it's a growing company..
