I am looking to get one year of driving experience before I apply elsewhere. Is starting local with Pepsi or Coca-Cola side loader going to fulfill that requirement i need in order to drive a semi in a year?

Depends on the company; some recognize it but want a refresher course also.

Some may not accept that since local P&D and OTR are two different animals.

Local P&D is more likely to accept OTR experience than the other way around

Thank you for your response. That make sense. I never looked at it that way.

Twiss Transport and Florida Beauty Express has some local work going on. Couple of new drivers posted they drive box trucks around Florida for those two companies. You'd still need a refresher to hit the road in a tractor-trailer if you drive box trucks for a few months. Many companies have their own refresher, so it's no cost to you if you stick with them a few months.

The "High turn-over" companies might accept it, but the bigger, more legit companies...probably not. There are a few companies that will train you in a semi, pay you per-deim while training, then turn you lose in a truck by yourself. Of course you have to agree to work for them for a year or so before you go elsewhere, or you'll have to pay for the training, which can be upwards of $4000, depending on the company. Most larger companies want OTR experience and local P&D work won't qualify.
Here:s a link to some of the companies that will train you free if you work for them:

    1. There are trucking companies that offer CDL training through their very own truck driving schools. These are known as company-sponsored training programs, and each of them is structured differently.

Are you trying avoid OTR? If so, Comcar has lots of local tractor-trailer work, but the pay isn't too good.

Ya, I always thought that was weird. An OTR driver can jump right into local delivery but not the other way around.
