After just hearing an officail from Western Express say that they couldn't use Elogs for hourly pay because they aren't accurate enough, that says enough to me the Elogs SHOULDN'T be mandatory.

Thanks for making this thread. Otherwise I would have had to do it and I have to log new threads as "on duty not driving":biggrin_25525:

Unfortunately it seems we have another p***ing contest going here.

If you do or do not want to sign the petition that is 100% your right.

At the current point in my career it does not affect me. I own my own truck but the company who's freight I pull requires me to have a qualcom. Regardless, I did sign the petition because I don't think there is any good reason for the government to require my fellow drivers who make the added effort of running under their own authority -- and all the jumping though hoops (errrrrr i mean paperwork) that entails -- to be required to purchase EOBR's. It is just one more cost that does NOT make drivers safer.

As to whether EOBR's are good or bad... well that should be a personal decision. They are quick and convenient to use but I am sure I am not the only one who has crept that last 2 miles to the truck stop under 25 to keep it from tossing me on the drive line and into the dreaded VIOLATION territory. Not to mention how screwed up things can get when some nice shipper takes 6 hours to load you and then kicks you off the lot instead of letting you finish an 8 for a split. In so many words... I would toss my qualcom out the window in heart beat if it were up to me but I am happy with the company I am with at this stage in my career and they say I must keep it on the dash :biggrin_2552:

Lastly, in response to the many comments about companies changing logs or demanding you run tired because the QC says you can, I have only one thing to say to that. QUIT!!!! If they will not let you run safe and legal don't run. It is your life and your license, never risk either merely for someone else's profit margins. I know this is a scary proposition -- especially if you have a contract to pay off school or a lease or some such -- but in the long run you will be better off. There are always plenty of companies that will be happy to hire you and treat you less like a slave. I have run qualcom with 2 different companies. One was a training company that was less evil than most and currently I am an independent contractor for one of the biggest. Never with either of these companies has my log been altered without me calling in and giving a very good reason why the drive line should be changed. Also, I have never had a dispatcher insist that I have to drive when I felt unsafe doing so. I have had them apply pressure but the magic words "safety department" always got them to change their tune rather quickly.

Anyhow I (like this thread) got a bit off topic. Please sign this petition whether or not it affects you directly. Help out your fellow truckers and take the 30 seconds to sign it. We need to start trying to be heard in Washington or they will just keep regulating our sanity away one rule at a time.

the box i got the brief luxory of using. had you driving if that speedometer registered ONE mph. no getting around it other then flat out being parked. ON THE SPOT.

now if you were just starting a shift. you could drive up to 10 miles and have it go back to previous duty status. but after 10 miles. your clocki continued from start point. so if you started with 11 hours. and you stopped within 10 miles. don't know how long though. but you 11 would reset. if you kept driving. your 11 would start ticking down at the point you exceeded 10 miles. around the 10 hour 45 minute mark. give or take. and doesn't stop untill that truck is parked.

the machine also wouldn't let you touch it till 1 minute had passed. after 1 minute the screen would automatically change to on duty, and buttons would light up so you could change your on duty to off duty or sleeper.

I don't really go in for petitions, primarily because they really don't carry much weight. Every politician ignores them because they know that hardly any of the signers are from their district. That is why I have, for several years, gone straight to the politicians themselves. I am always writing to calling about something to my hired help in both D.C and the state house. I think what some fail to remember is that those reps in the house and the senators are only concerned about their particular state and their constituents. When they here a hoopla from their own constituents, then they sit up and take notice. it does take a little more effort to put some sentences together and write your hired help than it does to put a name and email on a petition. But as with most things, you only get what you put in.

It is common knowledge that on most issues, a rep or senator may not even get one email, letter, fax, or phone call. If they get one, they will at least look at what the issue is. If they get two, they will start to study the issues, if they get three or more constituents yelling about the issue, then they start to realize they better do something one way or the other. For all the hollering people do among themselves, hardly any of these same people take a little time out of their day and yell at who really needs to be yelled at! I have all my reps and senators contact numbers in my phone contact list. When I need to I give their office a quick call. Try it sometime. You might find it is kind of fun!

Well it's technically duty related since the topic is about Hos and we all have some sort of thought about the current Hos. (Just so you know mattbnr line 4 is at the bottom for on duty)
