I seem to remember from the couple days in school I payed attention a story about someone in the beginning of Nazi Germany.. It went something by the author like this. First they came for the Socialists but I didn't care..It didn't affect me. Then they came for the Trade Unions but I was not a member. Then they came for the Jews but still felt it would be O.K. Then....They came for me...And there was no one left......
A little dramatic? Maybe. But sooner or later..All you saying 'It doesn't affect me-it's happening to them' all these new rules and regs are going to affect you and maybe...just maybe looking back would have wished we had made a stand. Just sayin. No..I don't have the answers on how to stop this over regulation B.S...But I will follow someone who does..Or at least tries. (######## on TTR) doesn't count..SheepDog Thanks this. -
But the new HOS has barely made a blip on the radar for me, and I am using Elogs. I factor in the stuff before I schedule the run. One thing that really messes people up is that they do not communicate things as far in advance as they can. A driver knows more than anyone when a load can get somewhere, they can check weather along the route and anticipate delays or plan alternate routes to avoid, and factor in any time changes. I use state 511 apps on my phone and I can easily see where any road issues are, construction or accidents. Today, both the google maps on my iPhone, and the Iowa 511 app showed a major traffic backup on I-80. I stopped and determined an alternate route, and avoided all the nonsense. There was no problem regarding load being anywhere, so I didn't need to let anyone know of the change.
If the regs finally run me out of trucking. It is no big deal. I will make my way doing something else. Unlike the Nazi analogy, there is no one hauling me off to do this line of work or locking me up if I don't do it. There is nothing that says I can't put a "for sale" sign in the window of my truck and move on. People will eventually figure out if they want to eat or not. I heard all of this same terrible prognosticating in '91 with the CDL being required the following spring. I heard all of this same stuff when the first HOS change came about, then the next one, then the next one. Now the Elog stuff has everyone all shook up. Thing is, in all the changes, I have never seen anyone being held at gunpoint and being forced to do this line of work. And I don't see a long line of truckers at the unemployment office, except of their own doing.
It is not selfish to think that it is not affecting me. Only those that have irrational fears are affected. I never lose any sleep over what the powers that be are dreaming up. I do contact my rep and senators about concerns. As FDR stated, "the only thing we have to fear, is fear itself". There are those that will always curse the darkness, and there are those who will light a candle. When people get all caught up in negativity, they lose the ability to reason thru the problem.
But I just wish that those who claim the they are not going to be hamstrung by a computer, or just one more regulation and they are going to quit, would please expedite things and quit now and save us all the bellyaching. All it does is make life miserable for everyone. But it is true, some folks are not happy unless they are making others miserable. They want everyone to share their fears. Well, some of us will just refuse to go down that road. -
So whose going to be the first to figure out how to run 2 elogs?
Cowpie1 Thanks this. -
I wish we could drive 19 hours a day so I could work 200 hours a week for the same paycheck...
You guys are sooooo far from understanding the issues here. The less trucks on the road, the less hours everyone works... Equals MORE PAY FOR EVERY MILE YOU DO WORK.
If we had no regulations, we would be expected to work 23 hours a day everyday. Why do you want your competition to be able to run 18 hour days? E-logs will put everyone on the same playing field....OH I just answered my own question. You don't want to be on a level field because you are afraid you might actually have to please your customers.realsupatrucka Thanks this. -

The under pay is the problem not the legal running

I'm on paper and elogs wouldn't affect me, but if that's not stopped, what's next? Somewhere an accident investigator is thinking "dam, it'd be really nice if that fedex truck that hit the bus in Cali had a cam pointed at the driver".
I don't think it's far fetched to have heart and BP monitors sending info to the computer. Some NFL teams are having players wear sleep monitors, I could easily see that happening in this industry. Or wearing those nod-off monitors, and having that recorded as a critical event.
Mercifully, we'll probably have automated trucks replacing us before it gets too bad. -
But the solution always remains the same... you do not, nor are you required, to do this line of work! Go be an airline pilot and see if the regs are easier. The NFL team stuff... man, it is so hard to grasp by some, that when someone else is doing the paying, they have the right to set the standards. And that is not government mandated either! Big difference.
But for some to even equate this to Nazi's rounding up Jews, Gypsys, political dissidents, etc and locking them up in concentration camps and murdering them is pretty myopic.
