Not sure how they come up with that number.
Sounds like a second opinion is needed. Have an independent cummins shop around?

If you trust the guy with that s60, do it. You might have to update its computer from ddec2 to ddec4 or something like that, but that motor is gold compared to what you'e got. Plus $3500 for an entire truck has to have some value in addition to the motor even if totaled. Oh, and I have a cm871 cummins now but used to have detroit s60 in my old truck. Wish I still had it, hehe.

    RSB34 Thanks this.

I could be very wrong but I thought that if you had a Cummins engine that means your truck is wired for Cummins. I thought changing different engines that way won't work with the wiring.

If it were me I would go to Cummins and just buy a Recon big cam engine. That thing will run forever and it's probably cheaper than anything else you would buy.

Or find a place with a low mileage engine and they can put it in for you and everything.

Buy that wrecked truck and don't look back it should have most all the wiring ect you will need. While that detroit is out re seal the rear structure and update bull gear to a ddec 4 with other little changes. If you want it to pull like the 600 go ahead and swap in a 4912 cam and bigger squirters with a matching tune. You'll make your money back in fuel savings before the end of the year. And you can sell your engine as a core for prob $1500.

My mechanic decided to go to Fl. He will be back today. I like the Detroit idea they are both classics so I believe I would have most of the wiring I need. Can sell the core of the Cummins and make up half my money for the wrecked truck. I could also pull the rears and trans whatever else I wanted to either pack in my barn for future use or sell. I'm not worried about the power I pretty much only run up and down 81 from Syracuse Ny. To philly area. Or Rochester and buffalo. The older I get the less I feel the need to blow people's doors off.

yes I would be grabbing parts off it to stash in my barn for future use. Not to mention a rebuild down the road for the Detroit will be a lot cheaper than $45,000
