Very useful, thanks. Thanks to all that contributed. I forgot to mention that I'm leaning heavily towards Detroit Diesel engines because of forum research.
After reading and re reading all those posts. My questions are now:
1. Does Freightliner have a warranty that covers emission parts and systems and if it does, until what time or mileage?
2. Is the Detroit Diesel warranty that goes to 600,000 miles cover anything at all related to emissions?
3. Should I be aiming to get trucks that have under 200,000 miles? I see that idling time is the bigger issue but less mileage means we could do better maintenance on the trucks once that's required. It has been said more than a couple times that the maintenance fleets do is normally pretty minimal
Signs that you will have DPF and emission problems?

Also, since this is such a risky prop consider leasing the power you need from a large player like Ryder or Penske. Negotiate your contract to lean heavy on miles and lite on fixed costs. All this EGR stuff will be their problem not yours.
Add a replacement clause for whatever you can stand like 24 to 48 hrs etc.
May not be the answer but it's worth a look.....

The first sign that you will have DPF problems would be that you have one.

Just heard from a mobile mechanic that the color of a DPF could tell you whether its good or bad or what condition its in. Is this true and if it is, is it because of the charring or burning or something else?

At approx. 342,000K miles my DD15 took a turn "for the worse" so to speak. In the last month I've put over $5700.00 into emissions repairs. That's NOT counting warranty work that was part of the problem. In all fairness $2077.00 of the amount was for a reman DPF. That came at the 349,000 mile mark. I wasn't taken aback with the DPF cost.......I knew it was coming. Other emission related issues have reared it's ugly head as well. "Fortunately" warranty covered the repairs of the EGR system. As of today my ride is now listed on Truck Paper. Warranty goes to 500K. I'm @ 352K. Can't take it anymore!! Never hoped I'd become part of the statistics with regards towards the emission engines. Like most I've maintained everything meticulously. Not sure what good this post will do the OP. I'd say prepare for HUGE, CONSISTENT repair bills!! Once the problems start they don't stop!! Warranties will only cover so much and go so far.
Perhaps a good thing to come of this is the fact there will be one less truck competing. Best of luck. -

All the emissions parts on dpf trucks have a 400k to 600k average lifespan. The problems start to show up as early as 200k. It's not cheap, but not rocket science either. On a 09 isx clean dpf at 250k or 5k hours.. Don't clean the doser injector, just replace it at the same time. My DOC died at 550k...cost 3k for the part. The egr valve and cooler got replaced at 575k...$ 2300 for parts. Turbo at 590k... $3100.
look at all the used trucks for sale with 250k and up mileage, if you plan to keep running an emissions truck, have a plan and learn everything you can about how they work.Rockwyrm and Hegemeister Thank this.
