Sitting here in a TS watching the comings and goings and these questions just popped into my head.
Why do we back into a spot when there as spots we can pull through?
Why do we back into spots between two trucks when there are lots of open spaces?
Why do we park next to a reefer and complain about the noise?
I parked my truck away from everyone and the next four trucks parked around me despite all the open spaces.
Why do people pull in backwards?
Why do people pull in backward with two empty slots on either side of them?
Why leave your lights on all night?
Why do bobtail park all the way back in a full slot?
I have other silly questions, but they'll wait.

Interesting questions. I don't have any answers for those either. I gave up trying to figure out the answers!

I will back into a spot when there are pull throughs available just to practice backing. I pull into a backin spot so it is quieter but, I make sure it is one I can back out of easily in the morning. Same reason when bobtail I back all the way to the back of the stall, it is just quieter and sometimes we have put two bobtails in the same spot if we are leaving in the morning together.

Ok about the pull into, but there is a guy in front on me pulled in and his trailer is stuck out 8' into the drive path. It won't be very quiet when I pound on his door to move so I can get out at 4am..
-
Luckily for me you have to beat on his door.
-
Ok when the second truck pulls in and leave his trailer sticking out and is even closer to you it is time to move ...
Now I know I can get out and not have wake anyone up... -
Why do we back into a spot when there as spots we can pull through?
Location, location, location. Proximity to truck stop entrance.
Why do we back into spots between two trucks when there are lots of open spaces?
Location, location, location. Proximity to truck stop entrance.
Why do we park next to a reefer and complain about the noise?
I don't complain about the noise so I don't know. I know what I'm getting in to when I park next to one.
Why do people pull in backwards?
It's quieter
Why do people pull in backward with two empty slots on either side of them?
It's quieter
Why leave your lights on all night?
It's usually by accident.
Why do bobtail park all the way back in a full slot?
I don't know. Maybe there was another bobtail parked with them that left? If not, I dunno. I try to not ever do that.Trilleth Thanks this. -
I don't think these are silly questions I think they are a result of silly people! Well more like ignorant people. I wouldn't recommend you picking up any of those above habits. They were either all newbies, or all, well driving like newbies! Don't do crap like that!

Why do reefers park in a whole row of flatbeds when the rest of the truckstop is almost empty?
-
When I park, I always select a spot in the back row with grass around for my dogs. The only thing I try to avoid is high idlers, reefers I'm use to. If I bobtail, I look for bobtail parking or a spot that is half occupied with a light pole. Taking a full spot is a last option.
Pulling in forward is just asking for trouble because you have to back out into a blind situation. Too many weiney heads now a days will shoot behind you. Or you might find trucks parking all around you were it's difficult to get out. I'd rather be backed in where I can see what's going on when I pull out.
Alot of drivers will fill in spots in order. It just makes it easier on the next guy. Then the other half will take the wide open parking. It all depends how comfortable the driver is with his backing skills.
There is no excuse for leaving your lights on. Not once have I ever done that. Shutting down a truck should be a habit like everything else you do. Park, cool down, lights off, do your logbook, shut your truck off. I see people that leave their lights on as loose cannons because they are not aware of their truck and what it's doing. They also don't have a habit developed yet. If you are that tired, you were on the road too long and were a high risk that last hour. Scary!panhandlepat Thanks this.
