I'm not sure how other people do it, but we don't run that way. Each truck gets a full detail, ozone, etc., and is thoroughly detailed from top to bottom after each driver. We take detailed photos before the lease goes out and after the lease comes back in. We compare the photos, and if there is damage, then yes, we will charge for it. Additionally, it's not us that charges the fees; it's the leasing company. They charge us; we pass it back. We don't charge the lease operator if they don't charge us. It's no different than going to Penske or Ryder and leasing a truck.
I tell drivers daily that if you aren't ready to have the expenses of a business owner, do not start a business. Going the lease route is a business option, and with business, everything is a risk/reward. We offer company positions for drivers that aren't ready to take the leap and they might never be ready which is 100% okay. Being a business owner is not for everyone.

OK, so you don't actually own the trucks you are leasing out, you're just the benevolent middle man.

Correct. Most of our drivers are company drivers. But we do offer lease as well, primarily for company drivers that we know would do well as a lease operator.
