I have a simple question about IFTA and the New Mexico weight distance permits for those of you that have learn this before me.
I understand how to do the IFTA returns but Do I include the New Mexico and for that matter KY and NY miles on the ifta report even if I am paying for the New mexico weight and distance miles?

In CA, they are on the form as is OR. The IFTA applies towards fuel taxes whereas the Highway Use Tax or Weight Distance Tax is another thing. If the state does not participate in IFTA, they they do not get an allocation, e.g. OR.

Yes, you still have to pay. IFTA does not cover the NM, KY, or NY tax filings that are still required. Think of IFTA as the fuel permit, and MN, KY, and NY as additional "trip" permit above that is covered on your IRP Cab Card...or just another stupid tax and agency to have to file with.

Did KY just add themselves to IFTA for paying WD? I did my 4Q couple weeks ago and they had a separate line like IN.

I think the OP is confused about the W&D vs surcharge on some IFTA states.

Some states have two lines on IFTA, one for the fuel tax and another for a surcharge. On the surcharge line, that value is mileage based and doesn't care about gallons used. On the Georgia form, the gallons are blank on those surcharge lines.

Weight and distance fees/taxes are altogether another amount paid separate from IFTA. In KY, the only W&D state I run in, they have a form to complete based on your mileage. Easy to find that value since you already have it in your IFTA return, assuming you did that first. I'd expect the other ones to work similar.

thank you for all the quick reply..... I understand it better now, pay IFTA and then pay the wnd in NM, KY and do both lines for IN and VA that have the surcharge, one where the gallons purchased in the state matters and the second line where they dont...

The IN surcharge is mileage based? I thought you were supposed to figure how many gallons you burned in the state as usual, enter zero purchased, and then pay the surcharge on that amount?

Is this the same for VA and KY surcharges?

    RedForeman Thanks this.

You're right. Poor wording on my part in the earlier post. The GA web form takes the taxable gallons calculated in the first (regular) line and auto-populates the surcharge line. Had to look at the pdf of a return to check.

RedFroreman and gokiddogo, are you saying that for example in IN, one of the two lines stays blank?
    first line:
figure the gallons burned, substract gallons paid for, multiply the result by what ever rate that line has

    second line:
figure the gallons burned , multiply by that line's rate,

do I fill both lines? only the first(see above) ? or the second(above). thats what I am not sure about
