Did that as well, but I was on a Greyhound to get home, not for an orientation. I thought the Loop area of Chicago was supposed to be safer than the rest of the city. At least in my case. I was approached by no one.

Stay away from the south and west side of chicago, and for the rest... stay on the busy streets, after dark.

See if they will give you the $$, and buy a plane ticket...
in my case it was $20 cheaper, and 2 days faster.....
So include the loss of the stress, the cost of meals, etc, even if the plane ticket cost me $+40, it still would have been the best option.
Heck, a few guys in my class got ride with drivers that were heading towards the yard....that may have been the best option....kinda of a reality check, the inside scoop, and a chance to learn a bit...

You never did mention the company, but based on post you have made about a certain company, yes you will be given a basic road skills test when you arrive, just to make sure your safe and they can develop a "needs" list for your trainer. The company having all automatics will make this process easier for you, but they are super picky so make sure your head never stops moving, dont bump curbs, and always make your turns lane to lane. I have been to a few orientations and we usually lose students for 3 basic issues on the road test,....not being able to safely do backing manuvers, not performing basic trailer control while cornering and or not keeping the trailer in your lane, dont let the truck roll back even an inch, at a stop, having issues with finding a gear when missing a shift (unsafe)
They will not be looking for a perfect driver, but they will not hesitate sending you home if you appear unsafe and or do not have what they consider the "proper attitude". Good luck on your new job!

PS: After a few weeks of training your will get an upgrade road test and assigned a truck.

Make your next step towards becoming a trucker by showing up an hour early.

My company flew me. I would of rented a car rather than take a bus, I'm way too tall for that crap. Planes suck badly for me too but at least it's only a few hours at most usually.
