Since autonomous trucks are gaining serious ground should I be looking for a new career?

Trucking is a safe career; stick with it.
Military is also a good career. You can do that then retire and go into trucking. I think you can retire in 15 years now.
Coast Guard and Navy are great; sleep in a bed and hot meals served 4 times a day. The 4th meal is called "midrats" and served around midnight.
Your age is close for the Coast Guard, maybe 2 more years, but still plenty time left to join the Navy.

Didn't Duke have 3 different wives and multiple affairs?

    The sentiment is good though.

Willie Nelson makes him look like an amateur; 4 wives and 100's of affairs.

Okay, I’ll chime in with this topic! My take is that it will never happen! Not even in 100 years from now. Well this is just my assumption and belief you guys got your beliefs too. In my own opinion the only way this will happen is that if autonomous trucks has their own roads and no other mixed vehicle with human using said road otherwise accidents still would occur. With all the construction maintenance going on the road every year, that specific situation still a challenge for a self driving truck. This is just one situations of the many challenging situations on the road a self driving truck will encounter. There’s the weather challenge too. Who ever taught this idea of autonomous driving vehicle is personally isn’t a bright person, maybe an idiot one.

When I see a autonomously operated tractor with a flatbed loaded with parts for a helium plant make it down a lease road, I think it may be time to retire.

You should put in your 2 week notice to your employer now.
When asked at the unemployment office just say your job was ending and see if you get a check.

I think you should get out as soon as you can. Skynet will have the trucking industry all wrapped up soon.

Or I just want more loads free for me.

Most of what we enjoy today would have thought to have been impossible at one time.

Self driving vehicles will happen, no doubt. As another poster rightly stated, 5G wireless technology available across the country is going to be a major cornerstone for autonomous driving. Its bran new technology and its going to be huge.

Remember how much changed when we got 4G.

But for the OP, he can rest easy. Yes 5G is out, but we are having deployment issues rolling it out. We arent even getting half the range from a 5G tower as we thought we were going to get.

There are crackpots out there destroying 5G towers because they think its about mind control or cancer or who knows what.

These things will take time to work though, years even. But work through them we will. 5G towers are going up, the range issues will be resolved one way or another. And people will stop torching the towers.

10-20 years, I can see it for sure. Truck drivers will still have jobs though as it gets rolled out. Slowly, after 10-20 years, I can see the trade dying off as more and more stuff gets automated.
