go to the military first. trucking is not all its cracked up to be. most of us as a whole get treated worse than dogs out here. but on the other hand trucking would be easier if you dont have a family to deal with and if you get on with a decent company the pay isnt too horrible. but that is if you find a decent company...

His age makes finding a decent company that will pay for his training and put him in a truck unlikely. CRST hired me when I was 21 in Texas. We all know that's not a decent company. Wanted to go to Stevens but you had to be 23 I think. So the only other bottom feeders like Pam, USA, FFE would probably give him a shot. I would stay away from all the above and of course. When your motivation is money. Getting into trucking would be the last place to start.

Thank you guys for being honest... I really appreciate it. Would doing the reserve & going to school &/or working another job be worth it or should I just do a full enlistment?

P.S. The Stevens recruiter I've been talking to said they hire at 22.

pJoin the military , you can be a truck driver there and get lots of valuable experience , free training 3 hots and a cot. Get to see the world too......and get paid for all the above..... Not a bad deal, you learn people , gain experience, learn self disipline and responsibility , go in a boy and come out a man with your sh-t in one sock........then hit the real world running or stay for a 20 to 30 year career and retire with full benifits for life and a monthly check to live on.... Save your money and sock it away and get out and buy a new truck if you wanna still be a trucker....if i had it to do over i would have stayed in..... You have all kinds of career opportunities in the military and 5 branches to choose from.....you retire with 20 and your still a young man and even if you stay 30 your still a young man with lots of good years left in ya....

Driving is what you make out of it, do a good job and there is room for you almost anywhere. Driving jobs are like shipping, everybody want's you to work for nothing but hang in there and get a good driving record and you are set for life. Truck driving has been good to me and my family but again I had to pay my dues....

I did almost seven years of military before I started trucking but I was in during the mellow 70s. Enlisted during the cease-fire in Viet-Nam and spent most of my time in Europe drinking beer and smoking hashish. Different situation nowadays.

I could have retired at 37 in 1993 but I don't fret about it. I've had a nice career in trucking and still alive to talk about it. We can never know how things might have been.
