Military. No question. I would avoid front line duty unless that's something you REALLY REALLY want to do. If you do want front line duty, then by all means do it. If you don't, you will regret it. I would suggest Navy to see the world.

You can't rely upon anyone but yourself, and nothing will come along unless you make it happen.

Even more old guy talk - consider a career with a viable and healthy, reasonably managed pension plan. Believe it or not, NOW is the time to start thinking about your retirement years. It WON'T work itself out for you later. Police & firefighters often still have "real" pensions that usually haven't been looted or lost by those holding the keys to the till.

If trucking lights your fire, you should consider paying the dues required to become a UPS package division tractor trailer driver. The road to the driver's seat is long indeed, but is (was) worth it once you get there. Like every job, your performance, on-time punctuality, attendance and can-do / will-do attitude are usually documented from day one. Nepotism aside, usually the brightest stars find the next levels and promotions. The knuckleheads are lucky to stay employed, especially in this job market. Might want to wait until 1/14 to see how the UPS union driver contract plays out though. I do believe that UPS management wants to put packages on the freight division trailers in a large, high volume manner. I can assure you the union T/T package drivers do not want that to happen -- no how, no way. This contract renewal could get "interesting" to say the least.
