If I just use the dump valve, won't the tire still contribute to rolling resistance and still where out? Of I were to go the lift axle route, do I need to use a smaller tire on the lift to accommodate space to lift?

what kind of tires you are planing to use normally and how high would be 5th wheel from ground
also does anybody know how much axle raise in US
for example on scania lifting axle take between 28 and 88mm (on most chassis is 88)
in scandinavia many tractors have smaller tires on tag than on drive axle (for example combination of 315/70 on drive axle and 315/60 on tag) -

Just passed a columbia 6x2 today. Rear was the driven axle, front was lift. Would make more sense the other way to me too though.
Theres an article in fleet owner this month about them.

converted mine two years ago. i power the rear one. when loaded light i lift the front one. no traction issues. lighter, better fuel economy. no power divider to give trouble. johnny

would there be issues with drive tires wearing faster since you're putting all the engine power on one axle? Also, i recall mention of damage to highways due to high horsepower/torque modern engines on existing twin screw drivelines. Wouldn't a 6x2 with 500/1800 give folks even more reason to complain about us?

Only road wear with single drive axle are recorded in krajina when 88200lbs truck pull retarder 900hp+engine brake that kill road on hot summer and steep 9/10%downhill

WRONG
try to think different, when you have 6x4 , each axle is pushing when cornering each axle is pushing forward that eats tires especially on front drive axle , also when you have 6x2 you can lift axle when you are light or empty
