I had posted a great link on this. It’s in my yadda yadda thread somewhere.
Easiest to do with two people.
Press the brake for between 90 to 100 psi. If I remember right. Should be about an inch and a half. Over two bad. Under one bad. Sorry... I’ve been working with disk brakes. So don’t practice that anymore.
You can mark the rod with a piece of masking tape.
This is length of travel. Not slack distance. That is too much hassle to check on drums with auto adjusters.
It is highly recommended to have a mechanic adjust auto slack adjusters. Two reasons.
One) They are just plain strange to adjust. Need experience like a mechanic has.
Two) If auto slack adjuster is out. Probably something more than simple adjustment.Cam Roberts Thanks this. -
If the the brake chamber’s pushrod moves over 2” after you apply the brakes then your brakes need adjustment per DOT.

I keep zip ties on my pushrods , that I install with the brakes released, that way I can see how much travel they have anytime the brakes are set.
Cam Roberts and dibstr Thank this. -
