While I'm at it, my doctor determined I don't have sleep apnea (even though I can stand to lose some weight) precisely because I don't meet the criteria of the majority of the things on that list.

When he asked me if I snore and am sleepy throughout the day, I answered honestly. That was the end of that. Yet, the year before last I had my DOT physical done outside of his office and the only thing the lady doc was focused on was my weight & neck size.

Since you talk about this guy and he claims he never had it and they would not let him get off CPAP. Why don't you find out what his number are. That will tell you if he has sleep apnea.

More than likely, no. That's because half of those with sleep apnea are overweight. The other possible causes listed are such a lower percentage that unless they are constantly tired and fall asleep all the time after getting a full night's sleep, there is no justification for the study. If ordered by a doctor sleep studies are covered by insurance.

One big problem is that people don't want to take resposibility for their health. It's the whole "I'm an American and can do what I want" mentality. The percentage of our population that is obese is a huge strain on our medical resources and has caused the rest of us who are healthy to be penalized in the form of higher insurance premuims due to the shared risk nature of insurance.

You've finally started to see a minor shift from this in the form of higher premuims in the form of penalties for employees that have high bp, smoke, high bmi and other self inflicted health issues.

If people question sleep apnea or have friends that claim they did not have it but could not get off CPAP. Why don't you just ask what their AHI numbers are then we all would be on the same level and people would not just be making crazy claim.

4 hours is the minimum usage requirement of course as you use CPAP you will end up sleeping more.

I knew you were going to answer such. Where is this scientific study proving that more than 50% of people with sleep apnea are obese? Besides that, if SAFETY is really the issue here, who cares if only 5% of those examined have a BMI of 20 and a 12" neck size, yet have an overbite and sleep on their backs, they should be tested too!

I would think that asking them if they are tired throughout the day would be a better indicator.

5% is a lot of drivers and lawsuits after all! But I think we are being hasty here. We could just ask them how they feel. I think the individual is the only person on earth qualified to tell me how they feel but what do I know, I didn't go to medical school.

That is because obesity is the number one cause and when you have 7 in 10 drivers classified as obese, of course those are the drivers they will focus on. If they discovered that the chief causes were having brown hair and being left handed, I guarantee they would put focus on those drivers.

To many people think everything is an invasion of their privacy and don't see it from the standpoint of companies trying whatever they can to protect themselves from potential lawsuits due to accidents.
