Hey I have another question. On propane, can one lengthen the oil change interval? My local hyster tech that does propane conversions, says you can double the hour interval when using propane. Curious if anyone has a differing opinion. One a small engine generator, if one can double the time between changes, that would sure help reduce the pita. Then.....though, propane would have to be available at all truck stops and I've never looked.

Generally propane cost way more to use..

In smaller (3,500 ish) genurators one 20 lb. Bottle ($25) with run it for around 9hr = $2.77 an hr...

2gl of gas ($14 ish) will run it for 12 plus hrs = $1.16 per hr.... that's $1.61 hr cheaper

And that's probably why so few run on propane.:Fuel expenses:

Some PFJ and Love's locations have it, but many don't. The few who do will have it up front near the gas pumps, because they expect to sell it to RVers.

And propane is expensive already, even before the exorbitant markup that truck stops charge on everything.

This is the custom box I had made you'll see the cutout for the oil check and a hole in the b 20230820_150351.jpg ottom to drain the oil..

Pic #2 is where the oil check would be...
Pic #3 is where I have the generator now.
Pic #4 is what i now store in the old generator box
Pic #5 is where I used to store 2 2gl gas cans before 8 started keep 4 cans

Perfect. Thank you. I see the conundrum now. I am faced with the same as far as oil check and change. I'm not under the time constraints that you are much of the time, so my situation allows me to take the time to drop the generator out the bottom of my box for service. But it is still no less a pita. They make those generators with full plastic to deaden sound and direct air flow, but it makes for crappy access to service. Can't even change the spark plug without disassembly.
So we need to make a cover, not a box, but a secure multi-panel cover that allows access to the generator, but keeps weather and sun out.
I like how your generator wheels fit over the edge of the grate plate. How much room do you have on average when hitched to a trailer, between the generator and the front of the trailer? Enough to allow a hinged cover to swing backward enough to access the generator?

I have a cnc plasma table and metal brakes. It appears enough drivers are doing just what you are. I'm thinking I should see if I can make a kit of some kind to make generators up to 3500 watt or so, usable.
I had a local company with 4 very nice 389s ask about making stainless scr covers. May be getting myself into trouble........

Also, see all of those bolt holes on the sides of your access steps? We need to make step extensions. You have the room, and your cans can be better secured. I personally use the type 2 safety cans, as I've had too many bad experiences with the plastic. But they make square plastic cans, and only round safety cans.

Look into the open frame inverter generators, they're a lot easier to do oil changes and work on. I drilled a hole on the floor of my box that I can put the quart bottle underneath to drain. When the oil is not being drained, I stick one of the rubber plugs that goes on hub caps in it. I currently use a Champion and the oil change process is very quick and easy. I bought a Predator as a backup, but it looks like the oil plug is located right on top of the legs, so I'll need a chute to divert the draining oil when I decide to install that one.

One problem with putting them on the side rails of the truck or in a box is air flow. They can overheat on a hot day, which is when you're going to need it the most. The 2 solutions that I've found are to run a ventilator fan directed at the intake, or reroute the exhaust away from the truck.
