i know this topic has been covered a thousand times and I searched but cant find the answer. I know if I log 8 hours in the sleeper during my fourteen I will gain back the remaining hours I had left on my eleven and fourteen but my con fusion is after I stop again I have to log two hours in either sleeper or off duty. do I have to take an additional ten hour break after that totaling 12 hours off duty or sleeper or just ten hours altogether to start my next fourteen hour and eleven hour clock?
please excuse me for all the run on sentences. thanks for any comments

You only need a 10 hour break. It doesn't have to be in the sleeper.
bryanrutledge Thanks this. -
so I could drive 2 take 8 hours in sleeper drive 9 then take a ten off duty then have 11 again

If I recall....
if you use split sleeper you cannot exceed your 14 till you take a 10 hr break.
"so I could drive 2 take 8 hours in sleeper drive 4", then a 10 hour DOT break is needed.fr8te_sh8ker Thanks this. -

sorry wrong phil your 14 does not stop intill a 10 break has been taking the spilt break still can not go over your 14 hours that started at the beging of the work day. so if you start at 6 am come 8 pm you must be stopped enless you have taken a 10 hour break. read the rules on the FMCSA website and don't forget the 30 minute break....

If you'd like to provide the appropriate references for your assertion, I'll acknowledge the error of my ways. Otherwise, I stand by what I stated earlier.
BTW, due to the ever changing and increasing complexity of the HOS regs, I strongly recommend the use of a logbook program to help drivers avoid problems before they occur. -
If you went on duty for 15 minutes at 6am and started driving at 0615 for say 6 hours. At 12:15 go to sleeper for 8 hours, when you come back out of sleeper at 20:15 you can run your remaining 5 hours of drive time and have 7 hours 45 minutes left on your 14. At the conclusion of that 5 hr available drive or 7.75hrs left on your 14 whichever comes first you must have minimum 2 hrs consecutive off duty or sleeper to satisfy the 8/2 split rule, and not even use the 30 minute break. Which means my day might of originally started at 6am but at 01:15 I could be finishing my driving more then 19 hrs after my 14 originally started thanks to the 8/2 split.
