Sleeper berth

Only option now for a legal split sleeper is 8 hrs in sleeper and 2 hours off duty whatever to 'post pone' the 14 hr clock. Cant exceed 14 hrs on-duty before the 2 hr rest period less the 8 hr sleeper...!

 

that puts you over. no naps if you don't have the time to spare. according to CRASH and other non-drivers that is safer than allowing us to split shift in any manner.

 

Yep, you're done unless you "slept" for your two hours whilst you were being unloaded. Oh, wait a minute, that's split-breaking, isn't it?
Why don't ya want to spli break? It's great for situations just like you've described, 'cept you maybe should have driven only six hours or so before you took your 8 hrs in the sleeper...

On another subject, is it really illegal to sleep in the upper berth while your partner is driving? I've heard that it is but haven't found it in FMCSR (or whatever it's called). Does anybody know? Thx

 

not illegal but very unsafe. if the brakes are hit hard you will fly out of the bunk and can posibably injure the driver causing him to wreck. it's just a safety issue and common sense thats all.

 

..they issue trucks these days with 'safety harnesses' along with them at new purchase---but totally uncomfortable and a hassle to mess with---stay in the bottom bunk! My trainer (who of course 'owned' the bottom bunk) would tell me to come down to his bunk 'while he was driving,' take my pillow, and sleep on top of his bunk's blanket! ha ha
