Slim pickins for local jobs with little experience..

Keep looking. My last gig in Texas was a small mom and pop outfit. We had two guys hired straight out of school. one of em is still there. We worked 6 on, 6 0ff. Hauling LPG. They would have hired you in a new york minute. Good Luck, youll find something.

 

I'm in a similar boat, I recently graduated from school and have been looking for local jobs based out of Houston. It's not that I don't want to go OTR, I actually like the idea of traveling the country, I just have four kids at home and three of them are under the age of six and I don't want to miss everything.

I've tried a couple of the local grocery delivery places, LaBatt, Ben E. Keith, etc, but haven't had a call back yet. So far, the best that I've been able to find are with a mega carrier that offered me a dedicated position out of Fort Worth that'll take me to Austin, San Antonio, and Houston, basically out all week with a reset at home on the weekends.

I figure that might be the route to go until I get at least six months experience. I noticed that a LOT of companies that are local here in Houston require 6 months to one year.

TexasPete I just read your response in the other thread about paid training around Dallas. You said you went to KLLM school so did you just graduate there but aren't going to drive for them?

 

I started the KLLM Academy but had to leave early due to a medical emergency with my wife. I'd made arrangements with FFE to return to school after she was discharged from the hospital and everything was okay, but by that time, COVID was here and they had shut it down.

It was a weird time because my recruiter kept in constant contact with me, each month she would tell me that they were still closed but planned to re-open soon, then around July she told me that they were opening to people that lived in the Metroplex so that they could drive to school (I live in Houston) then she just went silent on me. I ended up getting a grant from the Texas Workforce to attend a school in Houston.

I later found out that my recruiter had quit, and that's why I stopped hearing from her, obviously.

FFE sounded like a pretty good company, honestly. I was slated to haul Linehaul, terminal to terminal, 100% drop and hook. Since then, I've had another kid and not really looking to go OTR.

 

start looking in the service industry side of trucking. That’s your best bet to make good money and have decent hours. Having a class A is a huge plus when some places have ten straight jobs & one tractor. They need the class A guy once in a while, but not everyday

 

I appreciate the advice! I have a couple pretty decent offers from a few mega carriers. I've seen a few advertisements for people with a Class A to work in a warehouse for a company and occasionally drive, but every one of them paid like $14-16/hr and honestly, I can make that at virtually any warehouse in Houston doing virtually anything.

I had a few local companies make offers during school but I need to finally bite the bullet and get my TWIC and Hazmat. One of them was a company hauling chemical tankers roundtrip back and forth between Houston and Jacksonville. Maybe a "boring" job, but consistent and close to home.
