I don't do cross country solo runs. I own my truck/trailer outright and it's in perfect working condition. If I wasn't competeing against the likes of you I'd likely be making great money. As it is I work about half as much as you do in a year's time probably for the same net maybe even more. I ain't getting rich but I ain't wearing my equipment out hauling cheap light loads either.

You're right. The thread is about piss poor rates out of California and you backed up OP's point. Others (myself included) were commenting about how rates are down pretty much everywhere now for whatever reason. I never said anything about myself getting rates into or out of CA. I don't go there. You can have it.

I live in Ontario Canada and haul reefer. When I started my own authority and had a CARB legal truck, I figured I would be doing plenty of Cali. Turns out I have been there a whopping 1 time. I now have an older truck with NO emissions problems which costs me much less to run and doesn't have the headaches my emissions truck gave me. I do not understand why people will take loads going all the way across the country for 1.30 per mile, just to say they are going to Cali. What, in hopes you will get a good paying load coming home? Who drives AWAY from the house at their BEP??? Makes absolutely zero sense to me. Nevermind those who are doing it now are going to be forced into paying for new trucks to be compliant. I can only see Cali being worth running for a few months a year, if that. There is MUCH more money to be made elsewhere.
You need to realize that it does not cost a whole lot per mile to put 44,000 on your truck versus 20,000 or less.
I also do enough short haul loads and almost always get anywhere from 3.50-5.00 per mile **loaded miles** for them. Doing it any less would be stupid as it is typically one way freight. For example, today I am doing a load that will take me 93 miles empty to go get it, and 248 miles from pickup to delivery. I am being paid $900 for this load. Loaded mile rate is 3.62. All miles in is 2.63. If I come home empty I will have driven 494 miles which means 1.82. Being the middle of the week, I am looking to go from where I deliver this load and pickup something to another city (not near load origin city - there is nothing going there) to make for a decent week. The mentality of straight out and straight back to the house doesn't seem to ever pay as well as multiple legs of a trip to get back to home base.NoCoCraig Thanks this. -

The only way I would spend that kind of money on a meal is if it was for a charity event.
