Anyone know any smaller companies that take on graduates. I have researched all the big name carriers, but would like to hear about some of the smaller carriers. I am hoping to find a company that I can get on with and spend the next 15-20 years with. I am not much on jumping around from company to company looking for a good fit.

Have you tried the phonebook/Yellow Pages? I done a Google search on Transportation companies, Carson City, Nevada.. http://www.superpages.com/yellowpages/C-Trucking+Companies/S-NV/T-Carson+City/
The major roadblock with getting hired by smaller companies, is a common 2 yr minimum OTR experience requirement. This is something that their insurance companies dictate to them. To get around that they need to convince their insurer to waive that requirement, which is not easily done. I got real, real, lucky. A close friend of mine drives as an O/O for the company, and put in one of the strongest recommendations possible for me. If it wasn't for that, they would not have even tried to convince the insurer.
Try calling some, or better yet, personally go talk to them. You're probably going to have to make one heck of a sales pitch to them, convince them that you are worth the risk they will be taking.dkwidy Thanks this. -

Am I wrong in thinking that the smaller the company, the smaller the clients. And with that comes tiny little docks!

You can check with Jordan Carriers, Inc. They're based in Natchez, Ms. They're a small to mid-size company. I've heard good and bad about them but thats normal with any and every company. They might be worth a try.

Also theres Jowin Express in Colombia, Ms. They run around 50 trucks. Both companies are flatbed carriers.

I got hired on to a small carrier right away. The key here is to meet them personally. Show them that your willing to learn and wanna make them and yourself some money. Be personable, polite and to the point. Show them your a no BS kind of guy that is a go getter, but don't be pushy.
Dress nice but for work... bring what you need to be in the truck THAT day. If you hit it off with the boss, he might just through you the keys to a truck to shadow one of his other drivers.... and then cut you loose on your own for loads after about a week.
Heck, it happened to me.... -
