I started trucking with a small company. The owner had about 10 road trucks and several local dump buckets. I delivered garments in NYC,Boston and Jersey. After I got in the swing of things I enjoyed the job very much.
This was my first over the road job and I brought home about $750.00. This was 1979. The boss would give me 50 bucks extra if I didn't have a flat or if I did I didn't burn the tube up. Back when there was tubes in tires.
I then started pulling a flatbed back when you run until you couldn't run any more. I was in good health and had a great time trucking in that era. Trucking was actually fun.
I drove for owner operators during this time. We had one load that went from Russleville,Ky. To Riverside,Ca. that paid 3750.00 to the truck and my cut was 25% plus $300.00 extra if I got there in 48 hours as this was a team load and time sensitive.
Several years later I got a job that was union and the pay was great! The problem with this job was that it was a huge company and with that came a lot of rules and a lot of paper work. I worked on the average of 4-5 days a week and brought home over a $1000.00. (I'm learning. Less miles more money)
This was pulling a reefer and it don't take long to get tired of distrubition
centers and grocery warehouses.
I then went back to a flatbed and worked for fairly large companys. Quallcomm and paperwork. Need I say more?
My last over the road job was for a neighbor that pulled flatbeds and liked large cars.
My cut here worked up to 30% and since I worked for the Boss that had his own authority I was getting the primo loads and making good money.
My best check for one week was $1850.
This was a 1099 job but I could do good on my taxes and it worked out alright.
On this job all I had to do was leave out call in when empty and load back toward the house. No check calls. Just do your job.
That's why I like small companys.
It seems like the large companys has so many rules to follow that a driver can't find time to truck.
You all have a great day.Roy

Florida is the WORST state to move to/live in if you want a career in trucking, if you expect any decent home time.
No freight in Florida. Hard to get out of there.
Just saying. -

I'd take any advice from an experienced trucker about starting out in this economy, in Southern California. All I've been told is, "You have to go to a starter company first". It makes sense, but is there another way to get in at the bottom with a good small to medium company, fresh out of CDL school?

Many small carriers will have an office person. They may have applications at their desk.
Just because the ad says two years experience, doesn't mean they won't take you on. They may decide that since you were there in person, they can take a chance on you.
Keep doing this until you get hired. No matter where you go, you will need training. The BFI companies know this, and play on that. -
