Tractorfleet- Its all solos...my issue is not freight at all we have plenty of good freight our issue is drivers willing to do the miles so the truck can be profitable...all miles including deadhead we are at $2.38 per mile average over the last 30 days..the yearly average is $2.30-$2.40. What kind of deposit do you hold?

I have 20 units

Madhop-Thats IF I can get a driver to do 2800 miles a week...all of my good drivers are starting to reach the age where they would like to retire or move to local operations I am lucky to get a driver that can stay out 7-10 days and do 2000 miles per week the talent pool just isnt there.

I hold $750 deposit. I withhold $100 per week until I reach that amount. Again, my insurance deductible is $1k so it doesn't even cover that but it's a large enough deposit to make most drivers think before being carefree. What's your breakeven per mile; your cost per mile to operate?? Maybe this will give us a clue as to what is going on.....still doesn't make sense. Shoot I can put several trucks/drivers who would love that mileage and pay.
madhopsoo Thanks this. -
Our breakeven is $1.83 per mile...we run alot of Canada (ontario) so drivers need to be qualified to get into there as well....

I am a company driver,always have been.
been out here 28 yrs.
I'm confused. you pay up to .43/mile and then the driver pays his own fuel and tolls and trailer cost.?
do I spec the truck out? APU, engine size ,ect.
I personally wouldn't touch that.
miles per week sounds good.
if I'm confused and hesitant others may be also
.43/mile sounds good.
would work for you,up to that point easy. -
ok so is your issue finding qualified drivers that need to go into Canada?? That's like me, my driver pool decreases dramatically since I'm looking for drivers willing to team. That brings our driver pool down significantly. Can you run your operation without going into Canada or is it a must in order to keep up with your rates/clients???

That 1099 thing is making alot of drivers to run from this industry. The problem is the daily close calls, the regulations, the abuse from the general public, the risk of being involved in a fatality and all the liability! there's still alot of other jobs offering benefits, working in a warehouse or other industry. No health ins. no vacation pay, etc... will be hard to keep drivers once they see their checks every week.

The model that seems to work for expedite fleet is a 60/40 split with the 60 going to who ever covers the fuel.
Your BE seems very high. Taking pay and fuel out at 2800 miles, that leaves $2,000/week for fixed expenses and reserves. If you are down for a week it will take almost 2 weeks to dig out.dca Thanks this.
