    No altimeter, air speed indicator, or artificial horizon? I've always been under the impression that it's impossible to fly without those three.

    Impossible? Not really. Most of the Stearmans and N3-Ns Dad had didn't have a full compliment of instruments. The pilots who flew them didn't seem to mind and they did a fine job with what they had to work with.
