How small can be too small to reliably get loads? If you see these big companies sitting and getting low miles when there is no/low freight, what are the smaller guys doing? Or do they usually have more dedicated customers?

I assume it all depends on the company so those may be hard to answer.

A smaller company to me is like 20 trks, stay away from them unless they have excellent equipment. You don't want their shady stuff reflect your csa score.A company of 300 trks is more like a med size carrier and this outfit sounds safe enough to drive for .

Thanks Pattyj. Didn't know what category to put them in. Full fleet being replaced with T680s in next 2-5 months. 12th percentile I equip according to CSA.

You want to go with the largest third-party logistics trucking company that you can. They have more freight, more possibilities and newer trucks which should result in more productivity for the truck driver. Smaller companies have less freight and less possibilities, and when the economy is bad they will be the first ones to go out of business. Ultimately, you want to work for a private fleet company. These Private fleet companies have their own trucks to deliver their own product. They pay higher wages, better benefits and more home time.

I run with a company that has about 1400 trucks. I like that there is someone on the other end of the phone 24 hours a day. Be it dispatch or Road Breakdown.

I work with three dispatchers and they all know my name and truck number by heart.
