I got a list of possible companies to apply with following the completion of school and I realized there were 3 smaller companies I cannot find a great deal about online (DTR Transport,Apex Bulk Commodities,Marquardt Transportation). Could these mom and pop companies be a good way to start?

They certainly can be a good place to start. Not everyone begins life with the Mega-Carriers. Quality and integrity is the key.

Ill give them each a call and see if they are truly accepting applicants from my school. Finding a hometown company sounds better than the rest of the possible outfits.

The way they treat you is bound to be better....and if they paychecks don't bounce its hard to beat a company that is loyal to their employees.

I've always drove for the megacarriers. I took my time finding a good local outfit and finally started with one a few weeks ago. Like said above. The most important thing is how your treated. Good luck, It can be hard to feal out a company. And don't take what there drivers say to seriously.

    This.

Look more at what their turn over rate is, chances are if half there drivers are older and have been there for 20 years they are going to be a decent company to drive for.

check Beam Brothers Trucking out of Mt Vernon, VA..... awesome to work for... very nice... dedicated runs and some partime avail. The pay is good (they even give you 342.00 every two weeks for insurance (but you have to choose theirs). If you don't it goes into a 401K.... which aint bad. The hubby loves it there... home every other night!

OH yeah..if you have the option to go drive for a smaller outfit then by all means do it..even if its bull haulin..

I used to know a guy running a 6 truck outfit that ran balls to the wall all the time..

his wife did their logbooks from the office though...lmao..

Just be careful who you choose..some smaller companies want you to end the rules every now and then and I don't blame them..they have to compete with the likes of Schneider to TMC for loads..expect tight time lines but the capability to run a little faster than the big carriers
