The other morning I was warming up the truck. I was outside checking things over then got back in and I could smell fuel. Anyway I got back out and pulled the hood etc to check for a leak. Nothing leaking. Oh well open the door to get back in and see fuel pouring out of the dash.
Pulled the dash back and found a cracked supply line to the fuel pressure gauge. The 04 379 pete has a mechanical fuel pressure gauge rather then an electronic gauge.
Well the fuel soaked into the carpets and soaked the inside of the dash. Also have fuel inside three other gauges.
I have tried everything short of shampooing the carpets. It is winter here with freezing temps so I have no way of getting the carpets cleaned. We don't have a truck wash service in our area that offers interior cleaning either.
So I am stuck till spring till I get get a bucket of soapy water and a shop vac to give it a half azzed shampoo job.
The smell is very strong in the truck, I think some of the fuel got into the heating system because it is very strong with the heater running.
Is there anything comercially made that will nuetralize the smell? I am getting bad headakes from the stench.
Also, does anyone know of a kit to convert the fuel pressure gauge to an electronic style rather then the fail prone mechanical one. We have had three new gauges put in this truck along with a few orifice/ buffer tubes to try and slow down the needle bounce that is tearing up the gauges. Right now gauges doesn't work because the bouncing tore it up again.
Smells in the cab now failed fuel pressure gauge

the best way to make smell fo away is to keep air in cab hot and let vapors out, so combination of vantilation and warm air. After that try to wash carpets and dash inside ith jet fuel, but be carefull, it is flammable!
The next step is to use dish washing liquids. They have "built in" desodorants.
I had to do it when I got leaki gas canister in car trunk with diesel. We assmblied semi fuel system and got all tanks emty so I had to deliver fuel with car and about a week to remove diesel odor from car -
I thought mechanical (wet) fuel pressure gauges were against the law? Is this a factory or aftermarket gauge install?
Just about all of the aftermarket gauge manufacturers make a fuel pressure gauge isolator. Just google "fuel pressure gauge isolator". you'll get plenty of hits.
Either way, I feel your pain that's some major stink inside the cab. I had a satellite pump kick-on unexpectedly and wash me down a few weeks back. I ended up throwing away all of my clothes and showering twice that day lol. I used Dawn dish detergent; wash and repeat, wash and repeat. The smell has finally gone a way. -
Auxialy heater fuel lines in cab are not legal too. -
What kind of line was it? I have a mechanical fuel pressure guage also. I have high pressure rubber line feeding it. the line is 11 years old with no sign of cracking. Being inside away from the elements it should last a long time. All mine has to settle the guage is a small needle valve. If it ever does leak I can shut it off there. To clean it I'd go see a detail shop for some tips. You might have to spend some money and put the truck in a heated shop and pull the carpet out for the weekend and steam clean it and let it air dry out of the truck. If it's a bad as you say it would be well worth the $$ and time.

Well anyway, I headed out yesterday morning and the stink was getting real strong. I kept spraying odorgone in the truck but it would only hold for 5 min or so and the stink would be back. Well I came to an intersection and my foot was sliding around. I was like WTH. Flipped on the lights and seen fuel dripping out of the dash again and all over my right foot. Floor soaked again. Turned around and headed back to the yard. Boss put me in a dif truck for the day. Got back and found the truck all tore apart. They disconected the line at the pump per my request and plugged it. No more fuel pressure gauge. they have the dash all apart and sprayed soem cleaner behind it and had fans in the truck to dry it out. Boss said they were going to call on a front carpet on monday morning. I told him that I perfer to have the rubber if he don't mind. Easier to keep clean since we load in mud holes most the time anyway. But he said the plan was to remove the front carpet anyway and they are going to wash the bare floor.
I talked to the shop tech and he was trying to order replacment gauges for the gauges that got fuel in them and got clouded up.
So it sounds like I will be in a replacement truck for another day or two. I hope they don't take too long because the guy that usually drives the replacement is a pig and the replacement truck is filthy inside. Garbage all over the place. I filled two plastic grocery bags yesterday and am bringing some more this morning along with some cleaning supplies and paper towels.
It is a shame, the replacement is a 1 year old pete 386 and it is completely trashed inside and out. I can't wait to get back in the old 04 379 again. -
I have Pete mech gauge too. Plus some SW fuel press gauges. I just use cheap Home Depot brass needle valves to damp the fluctuation like Special K does. The SWs have braided lines but the Pete gauge only has Synflex tubing. Probably 15 years old. No problemo.
Sounds like the banging pressure killed yours. Truck technician fail IMHO. They should not have let that happen. -
Well they didn't pull the carpet. Also am not getting new carpet or a new rubber mat. Mat is 600 dollars from Pete and the carpet is 550 dollars from pete. Instead they had me bring it to a place to have the carpets shampooed. Oh well, time will tell if the stink is still there. Have to wait for all the other smelly stuff to wear off first and see is the diesel smell is still there.
Oh, I hate the 386 model petes. Ride like crap and have more rattles then a fieght shaker. -
the last time I had dirty carpet problem we pulled it out from truck (some pain, we had to remove seats, and some other stuff held with rusty torx bolts) and we cleaned it with high pressure wash machine in yard, with shampoo and dish wash fluid
