    Hi guys,

I went and took a trip down to willamsburg VA over the summer with my family.

I was shocked with the number of truck drivers who smoked.
Is it common that truckers smoke.....or is it not any more common then the normal businessman?

    thanks,

I don't know that it's a lot more common for drivers than anyone else. When I got off the road, I went to work in the office of the company I had been driving for I noticed a pretty high number of smokers standing outside the back door. Same thing for the place I work now. I actually quit smoking while I was on the road. Talk about tough.

More trucking companies are taking the initiative to improve workers' health. A trucking company's health and wellness program will call attention to the detrimental consequences of certain lifestyle choices such as smoking and poor eating habits.

Transport Topics 10/20/08 published an opinion piece by Mike Bassett of The Bassett Firm. His point was that truck drivers have not had the advice and health counseling we usually receive from our primary care physician. Irregular work schedules, long stays away from home and lack of health insurance have limited truck drivers' access to health care, advice and encouragement.

Mr. Bassett's article stated that the average truck driver today is 5 feet 8 inches tall, weighs 250 pounds and is expected to live only 56 years. I find this shocking.

Smoking is GOOD for you! That is what I'm waiting to hear from the AMA. After all, so many studies are showing that what was bad, is now good, and what was good is now bad.

I am a cigar smoker. I guess that I probably will not quit again. After all, I've quit, seriously quit for a year or more, three times now.

The last time, I went through a company sponsored program. It put money in my pocket. Not just from money saved on cigars, but actual cash bonus.

One thing I have learned over the years. I am happier when I smoke. I am more relaxed, and easier to live with. I DO NOT feel better when I don't smoke, it makes me feel like crap.

I started smoking when I was about twelve. I'm now over sixty. I have smoked for all but about seven years of that time. If it kills me, it kills me. . .
