Snow and Automatics

I drive an automatic. Sometimes while driving at slow speeds, it will slam into gear. There are other times when it's put into manual mode that it won't go or stay in the gear that I choose. Do any of you experienced drivers have any tips that will lessen the chances of me having an accident while driving in the snow?
