They only last when they're not being used.
One winter I burned through 2 sets of chains.

Depends on how much you use them ofcourse. Dont you have extra links and a crimping tool? If you’re running them on anything but snow yes youll be replacing them often.

I go through at least 4 or 5 sets a year running over Donner because stupid ####ing CalTrans make you run chains on wet pavement. I don't have a choice to sit and wait my contract specifies that I have to get there. Yeah that was my choice. So running over and back 3 to 5 times a week I eat chains like candy.

You're only supposed to use chains in the snow apparently.

    They aren't meant for ice.

Extra links and crimping tools are for people to cheap to buy new sets.
Replace one. 10 miles later replace another and so on. If one link is wore out and broke. The rest of the chain isn't far behind.

Where I live we pretty much run on Ice 4 months a year. If you cant put on and take off 3-4 times a day you cant drive here

I have a set of 7mm v-bar triples I broke two cross links on last Friday. For the price of a replacement set I’ll go ahead and fix them. Guess I’m cheap since I don’t have money falling out of my ###. Or maybe I’m just poor like the other moron said since I don’t use socks
