So do you have to set an alarm clock for sleep time?

    I never hear about how time is managed when you are sleeping or off duty. Do you need to set alarms to when you should be driving again, or can you just sleep as long as you like as long as you feel confident that you will arrive on time? This may be a silly question but as a self employed programmer even if I have a deadline I do not need an alarm as I know how to manage the time so I wonder how truckers do this as well.

    It is always a good idea to set your alarm clock if you have any kind of a time frame. That being said, a lot of us have, or perhaps we develop an "inner alarm clock." However, it is much better to wake up and turn off the alarm before it rings, than to fail to set it, and sleep a couple of hours extra when you are on a tight time frame. It's just common sense, really.

    i have 3 alarm clocks!

    I use the one on my phone
    I use a Regular alarm clock (AAA Powered)
    I also use a Screaming Meanie


    I RUFUSE to be late! I'm always early

    Yes, always have an alarm as a backup. I'll set the truck alarm and the cell phone alarm for added measures. Many times I'll arrive at the customer and sleep against the dock or in the lot and they'll wake you up. I always try to get up an hour before they open if there is multiple trucks. Early bird gets the worm on check in.

    That is right, the early bird does get the worm... I am like you, I set a battery powered alarm clock, and I also use my cell phone for backup. Most of the time I am up before the alarm, but sometimes it is hard to get up. I try to make sure that I get my sleep. If I have a couple of short nights in a row, then it does get hard to get up. I also know my limit. If I get tired, I sleep. I don't use alot of energy drinks and all that crap. I try to park early in the afternoon (before 1600) get in the truck stop and get my business taken care of and then get to bed. Get up early and get to where I need to be. If I can sleep where I have to pick up or deliver, then I will, just so I don't have to worry about getting there on time. Everyone is alittle different, you just need to find your way, and stick to it.

    I hate waking up right before the alarm goes off. I need those two minutes ######!! And do you notice how you're never sleeping as good as you are when the alarm goes off. What of the joy of turning the alarm off and going back to sleep. AAaahhh. Sometimes I'll set the clock 2 or 3 hours early just so I can get up reset it and go back to sleep. Crazy. I know.

    Most of the runs I get anymore have wayyyyy to much time. To the point I could drive the truck in reverse and still make it on time. There's rarely a need for me to go 11 driving and 10 sleeping. Most of the time I can get away with driving 4-8 hours a day.

    Case in point: I currently have 2 1/2 days to drive 300 miles. :biggrin_2556:

    I always wake up before the alarm. What really ticks me off is when I forget to shut off the alarm and the darn contraption keeps going off while I'm driving. Makes me wish I had telekinesis. And a sledge hammer for that matter.

    A lot of my loads are like that, too. The one I have now picked up yesterday at 1300 and delivers tomorrow at 1100, and is 500 miles.
    Bad thing is, in the load assignment it specifies no early deliveries.

    Sitting here tonight I get a preplan, picking up earlier this afternoon and delivering tomorrow by midnight - another 500 miler.
    Don't know how the planners think I can deliver tomorrow around noon, do a live load the day before and make it another 500 miles within my hours.

    Maybe they think I can just haul double 53 footers? Or maybe I can piggyback one atop the other, and avoid any overpasses. :biggrin_25512:

    I always set my cell phone alarms. No need to wake up a couple hours past my deadline.

    I love it when I have multiple deliveries (like I do on this load), and the load planner sets me up with a re-load after I departed my 1st delivery, assuming I'm empty when I haven't sent a empty call. :biggrin_25526:

    I do appreciate them making the effort to keep me rolling, but there's a reason why I haven't sent the empty call yet.

    I love my sleep when I can get it but when I sleep WWIII could roll around the truck and Id miss it. I use 3, my phone to get me conscience and 2 screamin meanies 1 hanging over my head and 1 on the dash for back up! :biggrin_2556:
