Actually they're the same pump price when you take the fuel tax off $3.619 but it's always best to buy fuel in the high fuel tax states so IL wins.
So how do you plan fuel stops?

Yep, price comes out the same, but you will have an "overage" of IFTA fuel tax credit if you buy in IL and don't use it all, so it will carry over to the next state.
-
Actually, no they aren't the same.

Illinois has a tax of 0.411
Missouri has a tax of 0.17.
Illinois base price of $3.588
Missouri base price of $3.629
Illinois is also a Bio11 diesel fuel too.Last edited: May 4, 2012

Ok well I thought IL was 38 cents a gallon and MO was 18 cents a gallon. Even with your correction I would still opt to buy in IL and forget about MO because that's how I do it by the seat of my pants and I owed zero in fuel tax for every state I ran in except KY 1st quarter.

I have started to notice that I get better mileage with the ILL fuel over some of the other states. Go figure.
For the company, the larger tax base is huge to have to deal with.
As an O/O, I'd want the larger tax base too so that I get a refund or breakeven at the quarter. -
I buy in ILL too.
it's nice having the tax credits. I run the upper midwest 5 states. So I tend to buy my fuel in WI, MN or ILL. -

A quick look and fuel is $3.979 in East St Louis today while Joplin, MO is $3.799 so actual IL fuel cost $3.568 and MO is $3.629 today if you were running a hypothetical from Chicago to OK City. -
My math error.
I have been up since 2:30 AM and mind is foggy. It's bed time for me.
We run a loop on 35, 44, 55, 57, 94, 39 and you can get some decent mileage in for the week if you can stay off the #### docks. Dispatchers didn't like me running the 8/2 split to do it though.
I try to get all my fuel in ILL or WI because of the tax rates in those states, .411 and .37 respectively. -
My last company used Fleet one.Almost every trk stop takes it but if you fuel at the preferred stops in the fleet one book I guess theirs a discount.

Some pretty interesting responses here, along with reasons why.
We get a pretty deep discount at T/A and Petro, and the driver facilities are usually a little better there anyway. Fuel plan strategy is to fuel for the next expected stop, plus a margin to get to the next discount stop. On occasion, it makes more sense to buy fuel somewhere else on account of the route or timing. Of course before loading to avoid the short fill game on weight.
One thing I haven't seen mentioned in the tax topic is some states add sales tax to the pump price and some don't. An example often cited is Georgia fuel being higher cost even though Florida fuel may be higher on the pump. For ifta it really depends on your operation, and your tolerance for the true-up every quarter. Using our fueling strategy, I usually end up paying about $60 at the end of the quarter and it's not enough to worry about. We usually buy enough fuel in the higher tax states to soften the blow.SHC Thanks this.
