mercer pays our ful tax , we can fuel wheres its actually cheapest. however if you end up with a credit, they apply it to next years tag.
i did pretty well, ended up with a 78 cent credit toward my tag. pretty good for breaking even on fuel tax while not even trying

This trip, filled up at our terminal in Salt Lake... cheapest fuel on that side of the mountains - was low coming in. Loaded in Burley ID, and running to Minooka IL. Cheap in-route fuel was Peru IL and the second cheapest was Cheyenne WY. Run to Cheyenne and load up with enough to get to Peru - which is basically the end of the trip. Fill at Peru since it is such a good deal for me.
I play for the long game, not just for the end of the next settlement period. On IFTA, I'd rather pay more in than I need to. That way I avoid having taxes taken out of my settlements.MNdriver Thanks this. -

i find that fueling half tanks every day. i actually spend MORE at the end of the week.
3 problems with half tanks. one is that you'll be in another state that could be HIGHER or lower. if it's higher you'll spend MORE money then if y ou would have fuel up full to begin with. another problem is that you'll never be able to keep up with your mileage per gallon. so if you mileage goes down. youi'll never know you have a problem. third problem will be more fuel receipts to keep inline with your logs.
to me, it's not about fuel for the trip and making a profit. it's about fuel FOR the week along with income FOR the week. as my settlements are weekly. at the end of the week. it's all the same. but if i go half tanks it's less profit.
i'll fill up twice during the week but at the end it's just enough to get me home. so basically it's 2 1/2 tanks. if i fill up 1/2 tanks i'm usually finding myself filling up 6 times during the week. that equates to 3 full tanks. and more headaches with the logs.
2 % of my settlement goes to ifta. so it don't matter to me about the tax.
i used to fill up in the yard. and the indian truckstop north of albuquerque. those were the two cheapest. but now that we're hauling tanks to cali. and the loads are heavy for the drives. i fill up after the first scale which is 30 miles from the load point and 10 miles to fuel. and hope cali doesn't flag me in. LOL. by the time i get down there. i've burned off enough fuel that it's really close.
it cost me .15 cents more per gallon but whatcha gonna do. -
All I can say is NEVER FUEL in INDIANA. The split tax will really screw you over. When I was running intermodal I fueled every Friday in Indiana (only used 200 gal a week being local) and I ran the Chicago area, so at the end of each month I owed around $100

No IIFTA credit for fueling in NM plus you pay them greedy bastages 5 cent a mile so I NEVER FUEL IN NEW MEXICO!!! I run Co. to Az. most of the time and always have a credit with IIFTA but always owe freaking NM way to much. Last year I got $386.00 back from IIFTA

NM is part of IFTA, so I'm not sure what you're saying. If you fuel on an Indian reservation, no you don't get any credit, but that is anywhere, nothing to do with NM. AR, KS, KY, NY, NM, IN, and VA all charge additional taxes in one way or another to run their roads. Let's not forget wonderful OR, who has the highest road tax out there.
