Most breaks that I intended to be 30 minutes or thereabouts, end up being longer, getting a shower or getting something to eat often takes longer than planned on.

I did a 7 stop LTL load yesterday that obviouslly didn't take the new rule in effect...first 5 stops were on time...unfortunatey the last 2 were between 20-30 minutes late....and I almost didn't make the last as I debted going the last 30 miles with only 40 minutes on the clock..but I did and made it with minutes to spare. Thank go I am not LTL...as it really has no affect on me otherwise

    mje Thanks this.

I don't like it, I really can't get anything accomplished, like a round of golf, deep sea fishing, riding the hog. seems like the only thing I can really do in those 30 minutes is to rearrange my schedule so that I can take a dump within the legal parameters of the new time frame....all in the name of safety.

Posted this in another thread a couple days ago.

Well this 30 minute break thing stinks on ice for us short haul daycab guys.
I drive just far enough to use a logbook, for instance Tuesday I drove round trip 468 miles about the longest trip we do.
This was from Kalama ,WA (my yard) to LaPine, OR to Longview,WA for delivery (woodchips) and then 10 miles back to Kalama.
It was hot with temps in the 100's East of the Cascades but I had to stop for 30 minutes in BFE and cook (AC is junk in my truck) when I could have driven an other 40 minutes and been in the Mt.Hood National Forest and stopped in the cool greenery of the mountain for a break along a stream.
But no!.....can't take a break where and when I'd like, gotta do it on the desert in the heat.
Yesterday was even stupider, I was going back and forth between Camas, WA and Longview, WA, made 3 trips.
Roundtrip is all of 98 miles but my last trip I had to take a 30 minute break just a few miles from going home for the day.
I had to stop and break at 2:45 in the afternoon for 30 minutes before I could dump my load which took all of 20 minutes and then make the long 10 mile drive back to Kalama and go home for the day.
How stupid is that!....just what I want to do when I'm less than an hour from going home and taking 5 days off for the holiday weekend is to sit at the local truckstop a mile from the mill killing time on a 90 degree day.

I wonder if 29 minutes, 31 seconds would be acceptable to break. Call me an elog rebel. Joking. I'll make sure I give the DOT the full 29.99 minutes, at least.

As far as how's it going, well, I don't like it. I take breaks when I need them. For my own satisfaction/needs and because I feel breaks are a necessary part of being safe. But this new rule just presents a new trap that many of us will accidentally fall into. Whether we accidentally mess up with the break and go over like being stuck, not moving, in an interstate accident traffic jam for 2.1 hours after driving for 6 hours (without any problems)

    or

unable to make it to destination on time because you NEED to take this 30 minute break. Never mind that you just came off your 34 hour reset, are full awake and rested, and by the way you've been getting plenty of sleep lately, eating healthy, exercising, have good endurance, but somehow you are not fit to drive for a few extra minutes over your 8, even on occasion and when necessary. Bull.
