At one time, congress only met up for a few months in the year, then later went back to their REAL JOBS for the remainder. They were normal citizens, not professional politicians trying to justify their overly high salaries.

I hear what you're saying but the really sad thing, it isn't over. If government continues to be ran on it's current course, these new logging rules won't be the last. And these will pale in comparison to what's coming the next round. All we can do is honor the law to the 'T'. And if law enforcement makes you move causing you to go into violation then or later, take their picture and get a badge number. If it causes you to miss an appointment and a service failure, but you were operating the legal way ... the point is to make this a problem for carriers to deal with, not a problem for drivers to deal with. If the carriers and the shippers start to feel real impact, maybe they will have enough pull to impact a decision in DC. But if the carriers don't have a problem with it, as drivers learn how to work the system, and the potential loss of 2.5 hours of productivity per truck, every week is acceptable to everyone else, then I don't know how to respond to that other then learn how to live with lower wages.

I used to stop when I needed to use the restroom. However, I have been running on the new rules for the break for a long time. I now only stop when I have to and can comply with the break so that I use only the one break time.
Sure is healthy for me and much safer, but I hate to waste the time

I haven't had many hard runs lately, but have bumped against the rule 3 times so far. 2 seriously irritated me, the 3rd was a minor benefit...
1) Had a 475 mile OR-CA run (55mph). Used to be an easy 8.5 hour drive, instead it took 9 -- except for the fact that extra 30 minutes meant I went through Sacramento at 1630 instead of 1600 (an extra 10 minutes in traffic). Would have been #2 on board, instead was #3. Would have had a load heading out in 12 hours, instead got a load heading out in 16 hours.
2) Dead-headed 150 miles/2.5 hours to pu, loaded for 3 hours (in sleeper), then had 525 miles to go to delivery. 65 mph truck can't do that in 8 hours, couldn't take a 2nd 30 minute break without running out of 14. So I had to take an otherwise unnecessary 8 hour sb split and then go on the board with an already ticking 14.
3) Took a 30 minute break on a 600 mile run (would have gone straight through before) and spotted a fresh wheel seal leak. I'm sure it would have gone the extra 4 hours, but always nice to nip stuff in the bud.
On the other hand, I have noticed that fueling has been ridiculous lately. I often used to be able to get in/out of all but the busiest stations in 10-15 minutes. Now it is rare to come across a fuel island that doesn't have all its islands blocked by trucks parked before, at, and immediately after the pump -- with only 3 of the 10 trucks at the fuel islands having hoses in their tanks. There have always been places like this, but lately it seems to have spread to formerly great gas-n-go's & I can only assume it is people taking their 30 -
When I drove a straight truck, I'd take naps in my truck.... I'd have my hips in the driver seat, shoulders in passenger, stick right in my lower back.... doesn't sound like it would be, but it was super comfortable. I'd spend over an hour sometimes napping sometimes lol
-
Well I'm get'n old, my back has some problems and even in my king pillow top bed I have trouble staying comfortable.
No way is hell can I nap in this truck lol.
It doesn't help that there's no insulation on the floor and the AC is junk, you could cook a pizza on the floor on a hot day.
I'm not one for naps anyway, I'd rather keep working as it makes the day go by faster so I can go home and relax on a big couch with a cold drink.Roadmedic Thanks this. -
Slightly off topic but related to the new rule: Electronic logs are awesome. I log in and that 8 hr clock starts it's little countdown for me till the required break. The law is the law and driver gets his lunch break. No excuses or questions asked!
-
Well I can not say how it effecting me since I am no longer driving atm, but when I was Driving I would stop every so often to stretch my legs get a drink use the rest room and none ever was less than 30min in reality. Or atleast I could have logged them as such. Elog I do not know since I never had to use it but I had already been taking them so nothing new.
