That said, I agree that Richter's numbers seem quite optimistic. A loose hose clamp is not my idea of a major maintenance job... -

Not to mention, I always have good cash flow. I dont even need to double check my bank account before running payroll. I never run my life or business paycheck to paycheck.Last edited: Oct 1, 2014
double yellow Thanks this. -
Ok I talked with a couple of local small fleet owners. One owning 3 trucks and another havnig 5. They showed me their numbers and what they were profiting. It seemed that both of them grossed over 220k plus per truck. The one who has the 3 trucks has one that does only local work and the other two do regional. He also has two box trucks and is contracted to the same company I am currently. He showed me that hes profiting himself around 50k per truck. Thats while paying about 54k to his drivers. This is factoring in that his maint cost is around 20k a year and about 70k for fuel. He does own his trucks now so doesnt have that extra payment. His business as a whole is clearing about 1.4 million a year showing me his tax return.
The other company was doing about the same profit wise per truck. They had more expense due to leasing the trucks which were newer. He has one dedicated to a grocery store chain running from dallas to houston. It does about 220k a year. The others are OTR trucks but usually stay close to texas doing what he called the triangle runs. He uses Internet Truck Stop for loads but now has a lot of loads that come to him so lot of days he doesnt have to go looking for them. Both say the industry is good and that you just have to get past the first year of finding customers etc. Both also said there is enough local work paying 300 a load now days that you dont even need to do OTR work and you save that much more on gas. The hardest part both of them had was finding good dependable drivers.
So with that said sounds like people do and can make money at this business if done right. But just have to find the right team working with you and have the drive to get out there and find the customers and freight. Guess the only way I will know 100 percent is by buying one and testing the waters myself. -
