I paid this sort of ticket twice. The first time I was completely oblivious to the law and I was rolling empty all the way from Portland down to Salinas with the tandems all the way back. That reefer was junk and the slider was junk too.... The fix was easy but they did fine me though. The other time the a-holes told me I was 3 holes too far....made me go inside the trailer and I had to rearrange the freight - batteries or the alternative was to call a service to do it for me.
The question to a road and bridge building engineers - Does that law make any sense, or is it some post Civil War Technology relic?.

I think it has more to do with maneuverability than it does road and bridge engineering. Same reason short doubles are still so popular out there.

Practically yes but the CAL scale cop who gave me the ticket referred to it as a "Bridge Law" as if the distance between the tandems and the kingpin had something to do with wear and tear of the roads and bridges. So I am just curious how could that be...

Here's a novel idea, if you're going to run a 53' trailer in the State of California, make sure you're set at 40'. Problem solved ;-)

It’s not a bridge law though, it’s a kpra regulation. If it were an actual bridge law and it helped so much to preserve the wonderful roads in that state then they would’ve never decided to allow 48ft trailers that don’t meet the kpra regulation. And the part about their roads being great was all sarcasm. Lol

Or... y’all could just run legal and not have to worry about any of this. It’s always something, isn’t it? E-Logs, bridge law, speed limits, etc. If there weren’t so many “the law is dumb so I’m not gonna follow it” drivers out there we wouldn’t have so many dumb laws to begin with.

I hate California just as much as everyone else, but I get paid good money to run out there because there are so many drivers that can’t or won’t.

or if you do and can't be at 40', just blow the scales. A little adrenaline injection does good.

Cops aren't out to bust your ###. You knew what you did wrong and accepted responsibility for it. Also id imagine you felt like a horses ### and showed that.

Attitude goes a long way with law enforcement.
