Bridge laws are not about physical bridges you drive over. They are about the bridge of your load, the distance between one set of axles and another. king pin to axle laws are about maneuverability of the truck and trailer.

A lot of states were against trailers longer than 53. But the feds didn't exactly give them a choice when it comes to the national highway network. State's still have lower limits off the national network. Don't get caught of network in ky, they have a 96 inch width restriction. And I'm pretty certain other states do as well, plus no trailers over 48.

I live in California so I'm used to the 40 foot laws. I just find it ironic that they claim it is to reduce road damage when they have just about the worst roads in the nation and spend the most money on them. Anybody that's gone over Donner Pass in winter can attest to the fact that they require trucks to chain up when it "might" snow. I've been chained up over Donner on wet ice free pavement more times than I can count, and those chains make great ruts in the concrete roadway. I also avoid going anywhere near LA because the roads are so bad that loads wind up damaged from all of the bouncing around.

Indiana and Georgia enforce it. I got a ticket in Indiana for a kingpin violation. I saw this driver in Georgia get nailed. It was on the I-85 scale northbound out of Alabama. The DOT made him sit on the scale for the longest. Then he came out and measured it. I would guess he had his tandems in the 11th hole. Needless to say, he ended up having to park.

Ive done power only loads with a 53 and they would come out and measure if i was over on an axle, but they never said anything about king pin distance, they said it was to see if i slid the tandems instead of reworking the freight. They give you the chance to get it legal before writing the ticket, but you can't slide the tandems to do so. Needless to say i almost always just had them write the ticket. They were cheap enough it wasnt worth getting up in the trailer and moving product around.

Because i have only owned 48 ft trailers for the last 10 years or so, I've pretty much forgotten most of the different state regs on kingpin to axle laws. They don't apply to 48s.
