it's not a stupid question, you know. It's deliberate. Sure, you and I know things like where our trucks are registered, what the plate number is, etc. If I'd stolen the truck, though, I would probably be unfamiliar with said information. They're looking for your reaction to the request for information, not so much the information itself
So i had my truck searched on friday

The guy in that video should have been detained and searched just because he was an jerk. I don't have a problem with Border Patrol doing their job, we all find these check points on the highway, they ask me where I'm from, I hand them my passport and tell them I'm from Vermont. Border Patrol works for us! They're trying to protect us! We have so much freedom that some of us take it for granted. I don't have any problem with people doing their jobs.

There are many policies & procedures in use by our government that demand
challenge, while other policy & procedures are relatively benign as any "real" threat to our freedoms.
Of the many policies & procedures our goobermint inflicts on us collectively,
the border patrol does not fit my idea of opressive nor endangering to my idea of freedom.
I much prefer that these guys & gals are there & doing that job.
In fact, I applaud them & wish I could be more help to them.
The video goofball could & should have picked a more worthwhile cause to rally
against; Something that does flagrantly "step-on" our freedoms.Faber Thanks this. -

And the feds wonder why people take shots at them?
Sheer ineptitude is all it amounts to. -
I am not a driver but I understand cops.
1st, driving is a privilege, just like flying -- you have no rights.
2nd, for officer safety, they may search your person and area in the vehicle within your reach of the driver seat -- no cause required.
3rd, if you are uncooperative and/or abusive towards them this indicates possible intoxication with cocaine or speed -- now officer has probable cause the do a thorough search and even take you to station for drug test.
They are often bored. Be polite and non-threatening and they will let you go with less hassle. Remember: nothing in your vehicle is a weapon for self defense -- they are all 'tools'. If you are a female whip up some tears and a male officer will likely let you go (I had a lady friend who swore by this technique).
Also, remember this is their job and just like truckers know how to fudge logs, cops know how to create situations to justify their actions and even adjust your attitude!
Of course, in Mexico $20 takes care of it... -

This past week I went to canada to pick up a truck from my company and return to the place where I work. This was the fifth time that I have crossed into canada in the past year. The man in front of me had a rifle shipped with him on the plane and when he went into customs they simply said "have a nice day". I go through customs and was told to go into the imigrations office for futher questioning. I am used to it by now. So far I have made 3 out of 5 border gaurds mad with simple answers to their "simple" questions. On the way back out of canada into the us the border gaurd was extremly nice. They x-rayed the truck. No big deal. I forgot to tell them that I had a rental car in the trailer. They pull me to the side and motion for me to open up the back doors. I get back there without the keys and said "can you unlock this so that we can look inside." Sure I can but you know we can use the side door on the trailer. The border gaurd said "the side door?" Didn't catch that one did he. So anyway the hop up into the trailer and I am explaining what everything is. The look at the car for a breif second and ask what I have under the floor. I told the concrete weights to load the trailer down. They wern't even worried about the compressed gas bottles in the emissions lab in the front of the trailer. The whole getting through customs took 15 minutes and was by far the easiest dealing that I have had with customs.

Sounds like he was trying to catch the two of you telling a different story trying to get justification to search in the first place. Not sure what his justification turned out to be though. Sounds like he was being very unreasonable. Who knows? Maybe a they had a truck with a very similar description they were looking for (from a tip or something) and yours closely matched.

That video reminded me of a card a lawyer brought for us in our conceal permit course. On it is states the following, (tho remember this doesn't mean things are gonna go the way u hope, it's just an exercise of your right);
"Officer, I mean no disrespect, but I understand my rights. I have the right to have an attoreny present during questioning. I have a right to refuse to consent to any search of my body and personal effects. I wish to exercise all my rights. If I'm under arrest I wish to invoke and exercise my Miranda rights and be allowed the oppertunity to obtain the advice of my attorney. If I'm to be taken into custody, I request a reasonable oppurtunity to make arrangements to secure my own property. If I'm not under arrest, I want to leave. If I'm free to leave, please tell me immediatelly so I may go about my business."
-end of card-
IMO- If a search, or otherwise moves forward, the officer proably has cause....it's time for you to be quite and wait for your attorney.
You have more rights then you think, and badges and uniforms are meant to impose authority (which is a necessary evil- wouldnt it be great world if we didnt need authorities to deal with scum), but you do still have rights.
And don't take me wrong, I have ALLOT of respect for our fine men and women in the Law Enf field.Lurchgs Thanks this.
