It's a handy tool to fine tune your driving to improve fuel consumption.

Scan gauge was around long before Rutherford started talking about them and became a paid advertiser. The original scan gauge was marketed at the big RV crowd. Rutherford got them to fiddle with the programming and sell it to his audience as the kr model. Then they made one for gas powered pick ups and cars and to differentiate the three models they started calling the original d for diesel.

The differences between the two models is simply two things. 1 to read the ecm odometer reading. 2. The "instant" mpg is slowed down to update every x amount of time instead of the faster d model instant reading.

Other than adding a few changes to the information displayed, they do the same job. The only difference is that the name branded one gets a royalty paid on it to some entity.

According to scan gauge themselves, and my personal observation of the d model the instant mpg display is different. It's utterly useless on the d model. Just updates way to fast. Reminds me of the digital display my old deville had, will read from 2 mpg to 60 mpg and 15 numbers between them all in the blink of an eye. Imo the usable instant mpg was worth the couple extra bucks the kr model cost over the d model.

What are the most useful features? I normally just pay attention to the average mpg. I have selected on mine the instant mpg, rpm, and speedometer.

I programmed the X-Gauges into my ScanGauge D to read some of the emissions sensors.
I usually have mine reading inlet and outlet NOx, DPF temperature and turbo boost. I can also read DPF in / out and differential pressures, DOC and SCR temperature.

armo, bzinger and PE_T Thank this.
