I drive like this in my 4 wheeler, have been for 50 yrs (when driving automatic). I've only ever driven auto truck briefly for about 3 months working for a guy and I used right foot both throttle/brake. In my car, my left foot DOES NOT rest on the brake pedal.

I drove an automatic truck for the beer company and I never ever used my left foot to break only my right. When I started driving cars I used my left foot for some reason, but eventually got away from that as well and now it feels funny and strange using my left foot to break doesn't even feel right.

When I got my bus license they said "We don't use our left foot to break." If you look at buses and the way the pedals are placed in the bus there all on the right side of the steering wheel and the steering wheel is in like the middle so you really can't use you're left foot to break in a bus and a lot of buses are automatics. So for this as far as what foot uses the break pedal automatic or manual really it's all the same break with you're right foot.

I think that the left foot for braking has a valid use. Like when the brakes give out, you simply place left foot onto the ground. I mean after all, Fred Flintstone did it, right?

I use my left foot on the break all the time. Makes it easy to down shift and brake at the same time.

Now having said that, I never use my left foot in a automatic, 4 wheeler or automatic truck (which mine used to be)
Anyway I think I've probably been using left foot to brake since the day I started learning to drive on 18 (not in a school and I was probably 17, oh my)
One guy I drove for when I was on the wheat run rode with me on my last day of the season and noticed my habit and asked me if I was driving a race car.

I do not ride the brakes and foot is only there when using the brakes.

I saw this a couple of days ago, but the white Volvo was from Quebec instead of Chicago.

I use left foot to brake all the time when floating. Kind of a pain to take your right foot off the brake to stab the thottle to get out of gear so, no to mention that just adds to your stopping distance. I use my left foot on the brake and right to shift while slowing down. Once I get into low range though I swap back to right foot since I'll be hitting the clutch soon anyway and won't be doing much actual shifting.

Maybe he was used to floating and was just getting used to an auto?
