And I need some help as to why. I was written for a unsecured load violation. I'm hauling AC units and the total load is 15k lbs. the first stack is two units tall and I strapped it down according to the diagram that the shipper provided. Here's what happend.
I secured the upper unit with a chain that attached to the ac unit and ran it down through the rub rail and back up to the upper unit ( see photo below) I then took a binder and had it secured under the rub rail. I then did the same on the other side of the trailer.
The total weight of the units on that stack was 11850lbs. So with my 2 chains and two binders I was overly secured I thought.
Each binder has a wll of 5400lbs
Each 5/16th grade 70 chain has a wll of 4700lbs.
So add 10800lbs of binders plus 9400lbs of chains equals 20200lbs.
20200lbs of securment minus 11850lbs of freight equals 8350lbs over over securment which should of meant that I was ok to roll...
However he said that because of only having 1 chain and 1 binder on each side of the freight the WLL was cut in half which means that with two chains and 2 binders I was actually 1229lbs short on securment.
The resolution to this problem was two undo the binder and add another one each side ( photo below)
What he listed under "Violations discovered" are as follows.
"Insufficient aggregate working load limit, 50% of 11850, 5/16 grade 70 chain w/5400 binder, short 1229lbs, 1st set of tiers rear of drop deck"
I'm so confused. Anyone know why the WLL was cut in half? I sure don't. All this happend after I told him that I didn't have any receipts to show him... Was this guy just trying to get me for anything he could?
So I was put OOS today...

The photo above is of the load after I added one more binder per side.

Tght federal motor Cartier act read to load securement with in the first 9 feet the binder it's self u don't add in for the weigh jus the chain it's self. Because u hooked into the ac then bak to rub rail. That's why. Wll is cut in half when not going strait over to attach to trailer. Kinda like crossing strap. U have two straps. So one thinks easily 10800 for wll. But with only one strap cover half the product. The 2 cross straps are looked apoun as one
BullJockey Thanks this. -

So wll is half when not connected strait n over so tech u only had wll of 5400. 2200 each chain. That's why the out of service
kona911 Thanks this. -
I have always heard that even 1 chain with seperate binders on it is still not considered adequate.
Each tie down point has to have its own seperate chain and binder.Raiderfanatic and kona911 Thank this. -
That is a "direct" tie down you have there, which means the chain/binder only hook to 1 side of the trailer. Therefor you only get 1/2 the WLL on that piece. So you had 2,200 WLL on each side.
AfterShock, gpsman, ramblingman and 5 others Thank this. -
At least you had two binders on that chain. Some of these ac places want you to use one binder and some security guard that won't let you out the gate unless it looks exactly like the diagram/picture on the paperwork.
They don't listen when you explain it. "It's the way they want it"
Once it's out the gate it's time to change it. We'll have to ask a bear to explain it to them. -
Not the way they want that's the law
