You don’t want to drive solo because you don’t smoke or drink coffee? Can someone clear that up for me, I don’t understand the relevance.
So sick of not making a living wage!

Be grateful you are making any wages. There are people out there that cant make anything and cant even feed their family.

If you can drive, all you have to do is pass the tests. There are practice written rests here on the site, keep taking the long ones until you get 90's every time. There are sites with state specific questions to try as well.
If you get your permit it's a step forward and shows initiative. Tanker and doubles are just a few more questions, the you have those endorsements it might open a door.
Some dry van loads require tanker because they carry totes.
Some driving schools will rent you a truck to take the driving test. They might have a refresher course. I don't know about Texas, but some schools have 3rd party testing. They give you a packet, you take that to DMV, they issue a CDL. You can take the test in any state and bring that packet to your DMV, so for example if Oklahoma has 3rd party testing you can do it there.
Also, some companies still use state employment offices in nstead of Craigslist, most of those listings are online and you can put up a resume there.
You might have a look at the local trucking forum on here, some companies like fedex freight hire people with a fresh CDL and do extra training, many of those jobs are home every day and pay well. Some of them will start you in the dock and train you when they need drivers, even the dock jobs pay more than what you're making now.
Look around for drivers pulling those shorr pup trailers and see that company has a terminal nearby.born&raisedintheusa Thanks this. -
I have an appointment to take the written test later on this month. To do that, I have to present my DOT physical card, so I'll be getting that. From what I hear, Texas only has 3 cities in which I can take my driving test. I'm going to look into renting a truck to test in. A friend may be able to get me on where he works, OTR, standard tranny.
I'm learning that a lot has changed since I did my last pre-trip 22 years ago. I'm also learning that I can watch a YouTube video on the 22 point inspection.
I've checked into several of the companies listed here and so far had to rule each one out. I don't want to drive or be trained in an automatic and I certainly don't want to test in one because I'm told that if I do test in one, I won't be licensed to drive a standard.
I'm really afraid that if I get into that whole 'indentured servant' thing, I'll get the crappy truck that doesn't have a/c or breaks down every week because I'm captive and other drivers could just quit. I don't wan to be out in the desert again, unable to idle and unable to sleep. And if any of you petty haters on here want to comment on that, just zip it! I've done it before; I've had to wear shoes with holes in them in the snow in minus 26 degree weather. I've seen dead bodies and bumped a dock in Hunt's Point while driving solo. And worst of all for you haters, in all my years of driving I've never lost an argument. I turned off my CB radio for 3 years because I was sick of getting told I was beautiful all day every day. I'm tough, I'm smart and I am going to succeed!
