So, after many a years with many companies, and 3 trucks of my own, and the rough times we encounter in today's world, my wife and I have decided it was best that we sell our 2 Pete's and join the world of company drivers. Now, I know I will be getting a lot of lip from many people here about not becoming a company driver, however, my wife and I have put much thought behind our move and feel as though it would be best for the both of us.
After 37 years of driving together and as solo drivers, I/we don't need people telling us what we should or should not do.
Linda( my wife ) and I have decided that we like what Prime and Watkins Shepard have to offer. Linda has spend many hours reading thread after thread on Watkins and Shepard, and can not seem to locate the bad in that company. Linda, however was able to find plenty bad about Prime. But I always say, "Can't always believe what you read" and a lot of what we read is from past employees, who left on bad terms with a company.

So, I come here baring information on both companies. Which company is better to work for?
Cant find much information about the teams at Watkins and Shepard, which I would like to hear more of, if any is available.

Thank you for taking the time to read our post, and look forward to the replies.

    Linda and Mark

:biggrin_25510:There's a web site for Prime, not the company site, but one run by drivers. Don't think I can reveal it. But I read it daily, and it is a toss-up as far as drivers liking Prime and drivers hating Prime. They haul boo/coo meat loads, which means meat packing plants and wash outs. Lots of N.east freight and shortys. Teams are getting about 3000 miles per week right now. Lots of re-sets weekly. Lots of 1000 mile deadheads. Don't see much about Watkins/Sheppard, but noticed good things when I have seen something. Hope this helps a little.....

Unfortunatly I dont know any "company" team drivers to put you in touch with.

Being a solo Prime "company driver", alot of the orientation info I recieved has team info in there too. Pay and raise marks, vacation, benifits...

Teams dont sit for long, if at all, unless they run out their 70(especially in CA right now). Anyone who boo hoos dead head miles doesnt understand that a COMPANY driver (solo or team) gets payed for the Loaded AND Deadhead miles too.

Another great thing about Company Deadhead... your empty, your fuel milage goes up, and your fuel bonus goes up and that means you get paid more. Im averaging about .02/mile in fuel bonus... thats at about 7-7.25mpg.

I will dig up the info when I get back to my truck... Im in a hotel grabbing a restart... why? because I ran out my 70 after a 3200 mile load (solo). Ive had quite a few good weeks. Ive had only 1 other restart lately because I nearly exhausted my 70 and I needed a fresh clock for a 2537 load I was assigned. In addition ive had 5 full days at home. In total....9334 solos miles in the last 4 weeks (28 minus 5 at hone= 23 days).

I can tell you the major complaints right now are coming from the Lease Operators... Frieght rates are low and some of them are struggling.

yeah, it was a little slow the first couple months of the year, but it is really picking up now... and I just got a message that we are overbooked in some areas and they will be shifting trucks into those areas to cover the frieght.

One thing, I think you should know, is Prime is shifting to Qualcomm Paperless logs... They are slowly phasing it in on all company trucks and eventually fleet wide.

I was the second person in the fleet to have it activated on my truck. As a solo, it really isnt that bad and requires some more carefull planning... For teams, its a perfect system... The only way you can get in trouble is if both of you run out your 70s and continue to drive. Just drive, run out your 11, switch...repeat.

Well, allow me to start out by saying thank you for the replies we have recieved. and the few private messages as well.
about the paperless logs, that seems to be the new thing, my wife was just speaking with a Watkins and Shepard driver the other night, and was told they too will be going paperless, or at least they are trying it out in some of their trucks.
3000 miles a week for teams at prime seems to be a rather low number by my count. i understand watkins and shepard driver usualy avrg around 3000 miles a week for their solo drivers. so i would imagine they get around 2200-2800 as we stand in our econemy.
I would also imagine watkins and shepard drivers teams avrg around 5-7000 a week? could be wrong.
why would a "company" driver boo hoo over dh miles? for years it was ok for my wife and i to boo hoo, as we owned our own trucks, and had to take those dh miles as a lose, 700 - 800 max was as far as we would dh, if it paid more, maybe more then 800, but didnt have to dh very often.
i did however locate a thread about watkins shepard, some 1,2xx pages, couldnt get to read all of them, but spent much time reading some of the more recent threads and read mostly good things, a few arguments between some fellow drivers, that my wife and i found to be houmorious reading for a night off. we did find many bad as well as many good pages on prime. but prime is bigger then watkins and shepard, therefor we figure more mad drivers.
prime trucks go slower, we are used to running the posted speed limits, even 80mph out in ut. and we do understand that becoming company drivers we will be limited as to how fast our travel could be. watkins and shepard trucks seem to be limited at or about 65mph, where as prime maybe limited at 62? 63? it will be hard to adjust to the slower speeds, as we will feel like sitting ducks on the highways and byways.
however, it will reduce the chances of a speeding ticket in slohio and calif.
my wife and i will be taking much time to put our thoughts into what our choice will be, as we are preparing to rid our last truck in sept.
this will give us ample time to hear from either companies and compare the 2. we do like both equaly. its just a matter of who we want to work for.
again, from my wife and i, we thank you for taking the time of day to read and respond to our post and look forward to more great reading.

I am a present watkins shep driver, and only average 1700 miles a week solo.
I can tell you though that the teams average much more, i have talked to a few and they barely have time to do there laundry when i see them and they are constantly on east to west and west to east runs as they never run out of hours.
If i could find somone to run team and that i trust to drive while i sleep i woulod definantly run team for watkins shep...
I would go with watkins shep if i was you guys.
